It doesn't sound like a lugging noise, more like loose rocker arms? Its makes noise in every gear when you first roll into the throttle about 1700 rpm. It's only got 1800 miles on it. Just wondering if it's normal or if the valves might be out of adjustment? I've driven plenty of Cummins in Heavy Duty class 8s, but this is my first in a Dodge. Any pointers... ?

Does it do this after it is warmed up? They all make a little more noise when cold. I get the same "rattle" in mine around that rpm when cold.

No, I think it does it pretty much all the time. Maybe it's just not broke in yet. I don't know. When I get it hot, I'll see if there is any difference. I know it is quite a bit louder when it is cold, but I don't think it goes all the way away when it's warm.

I have the same sound too, on mine it sounds like a valve tap, or exhaust leak it is heard mostly between shifts around 2000-2100 RPM. I took it back to the dealer but the mechanic said he did not hear anything. Mine sounds worse when it is cold but does not go away when it warms. I have 1300 miles, I do have times where it is almost gone, but then the next time I drive it is back. I wonder if it could be a fuel timing knock maybe the timing is a little off or there is something up with the computer? At times I can feel the knocking in the steering wheel, anyone else have that too? Please keep us posted, as I would like to know where this sound may be coming from and how to get rid of it.

It's not between shifts

My rattle is when you pour the coals to it in gear, I said it was about 1700, but it's a little lower than that, like 1500. When does this engine start to lug anyway? What RPM should I be running at going down the road? I read somewhere where it said 10-15% below govener, but that was really old data. Plus that puts it up around 26-2700 RPM. I think that is too high. I did play around with that noise last night and it is quiets down quite a bit when the engine gets warm

Best thing to do when you're worried about a noise is to go the the dealer and test drive a few new ones to see if they make it too -- that way you know for sure if it's "normal" or not.
