i have a 2001 dodge cummings and it wont start. heres what is happening. about 2 weeks ago i ran the fuel down low and was having trouble starting the truck, but it always started. today i go to fill up (low fuel again) and it wont start, not even trying. i was thinking i ran the truck out of fuel. there is a relief valve at the fuel injector pump. i pushed this in while turning over the truck and was getting fuel. after i stopped cranking the motor i could hear the pump running for about 25 seconds after. fuel doesnt seem to be the problem, what else could it be.

Air in system,or not holding pedel to the floor while cranking , Try bleeding the injectors 3 4 5 just till some fuel comes after air, tighten in order 3 4 5 ,then turn over a few times with just bumping the starter , then let the pump run for 20 sec or more . Turn off then try starting with excelorator on the floor while cranking no more than 15 seconds at a time with brakes in between to keep starter from over heating . could be the infamous lift pump? I changed a fuel filter on a guys '02 and it would not start afterward. Never showed any previous symptoms. Fuel was coming out at the valve like yours to but only at about 2psi, I checked it. When the pump is running and you push in the valve at the inj. pump does the fuel just kinda run/dribble out or does it have some push behind it like 10-15 psi? It could be you need to bleed more air out as previously mentioned.

(If you just bump the engine over the fuel pump will run for a short time like you said) -if you already didn't know-
