I would like to intercool my 89. Has anyone swapped an intrcooler from a 2nd gen. Or does any have a cheaper solution than the banks kit.

I know that some people have used a 2nd gen unit. It will fit.

But it does require some fabbing and some changes. . like to the newer style radiator.

When I first bought my truck I thought I'd put in a 2nd gen cooler... (I have one)... . but since I never have egt problems it keeps going to the bottom of the list.

I think the Banks kit will work with your existing radiator... but it's pricey. That mod is not on my list.

I installed a 2nd Gen (24v) ATAAC in my 92.

This is what I did:

(I swapped a CTD from a 90 into a 92 that was originally gas powered)

I used the rad support from the 92 gas powered truck, and welded in the rad support brackets from my 90 CTD donor truck onto the support, after drilling out the spot welds to get rid of the gasser mounts.

I used the inferior radiator from the 90 because it was what i had.

I used a plasma cutter to make the holes in the support, and fabbed up my own mounts for the "rubbers" to sit in.

I made some aluminum spacers for the upper mounts.

Also, I had to remove the "safety" latch from my hood and carve out the factory strengthening bracket for the latch.

I ended up useing a 2nd gen intake horn and adapting the piping for both the turbo and intake side.

The stock 92 grill fits perfectly, and I only had to finesse the lower valence a little with a roloc on my die grinder.
