Yep sure is. My buddy has a '00 CTD 5spd. Now his has a K&N Intake/Filter and a EZ box. I've drove his and I've drove my '93 a good bit. Compard to his,my truck is a dog! I could probably get him off the line just cause mine is a auto. but like his,you get on the gas at any speed and it GOES,the put you back in your seat feeling, mine on the other hand just accelerates... slowly but it does get there... ... after awhile:p Now mine is stock other than having the muffler hacked off and the 3" pipe in its place. Now my truck will blow some black smoke and his won't. Smoke is cool and I get a kick outta looking at the passenger's mirror and seeing the smoke(this is why I believe the pump as been tweaked slightly) though I don't have a clue about "tweaking" the pump, not yet anywho, but I'm going to learn:p What can I do to mine to get some go-get-em. Now I'm only 17 and I'm in the process of building my trail rig,so funds are pretty tight for me,but it's a dog now,I'm afraid to put our trailer and my truck on it if it's a dog without a trailer behind it:--) Any suggestions? Once again sorry for the long story!

Jimmy

Step 1- tighter torque converter- transfer the power better.

Step 2- Guages- pyro, boost, transmission (oil) temp, and get basline readings. You might have injector and/or timing issues. Mom's will flat out MOVE up to about 65mph, then it levels off. No smoke, either. New injectors two summers ago.

Step 3- Read the stickies about VE performance, and guys willing to help/ tweak and tune; and get under the hood. You might not take your buddy's 00 with an Edge EZ, but you should be able to keep up with a stocker.

Step 4- Learn to do your own work. Knowledge is power, and it will keep you from needing some K-Y every time you rely on some fast talking mechanic to "repair" it.

Smoke is wasted fuel, and gives the EnviroNazis something to whine about. I try to keep it to a minimum, though it is nice to be able to lay a cloud into someone's car when they turn up their rap cr@p at the stoplight. Once I get intercooled, and get the pump back up to par, I plan to be able to run a 85+ 1/4mi (4. 10s; it wont go any faster) with little to no smoke.

Jimmy -

You own the simplest diesel in the world to get cheap power out of. Compared to the Powerstrokes and Duramax's, the Cummins is by far, for the money, the easiest to BOMB, AND the longest-lasting. I told my Ford bubba about my mods (see below), how it cost about $1100 total, and how I doubled my power with no highway mileage decreases, and he just shook his head compared to what it cost him to get the same power increases. Your rig just needs some key upgrades, but not terribly expensive ones, and you'll be imnpressed right back.

Just for comparison - I drove (simulated test drive) a new '04. 5 a few weeks ago. WOW, really a nice, tight smooth ride. BUT, after driving my old, 238K mile, old-school beater rig, the new one only felt 'new', not faster or more powerful. Then I looked at the sticker..... and I thought about how insane mine would be if I spent half of the difference between what I have in mine (about $9K) and the new ones price. Nice sweet rigs, but after a few mods yours will boggie.

My 92 is the farthest thing from a "DOG" It's like greased light'n on rails!!:D I'd put it up against any 3rd gen. Even if it beats me, it'll know it just ran a race 'fo sure Oo.

As a side note..... when I bought this truck, it was all factory... . 100%. In fact it was just as you described. Doggy, in a big way. Once I had this PASTOR Bob kinda guy PASS me in a mini van!!! I had my truck's go pedal to the floor too :{ :{ :{

Happy BOMBing!!

-S

Well now that I have been biten by the BOMBing bug:D What would you fine fellers suggest to begin with? Hold on... I know this one! I'm guessing you are all going to say,get gauges then get baseline readings. Am I correct? Well ok after that what would yall suggest? I looked about putting a filter on it,but I can't afford to get a open element bracket made up. Could I possibly. . just drill holes in my stock box? What about a filter? Make sure its one that will fit inside the stock box:p Any ideas or suggestions about what to do would be great,I can't do it all at once thats for sure but I'd like to be able to make it scoot some more. What about pump tweaking? I'd rather let someone who knows there stuff tweak on the pump. There is a feller over here in Alabama that they say is one smart feller on the Cummins trucks. I was thinking about going to talk to him see if he could tweak on the pump and then check about the KDP,I read up one them and I'm worried about mine so I need to get that checked out. Other suggestions, ideas, comments bring em on!;)

Jimmy

Bombin

You should do the KDP NOW NOT LATER!!!! then gauges, then you can do better air in and out. Maybe the transmission next, then start to really bomb. Tweek the pump, injectors, turbo, then on and on and on. Then you can put your credit card into meltdown.

There are just too many things to change to list here like,

Advance timing

Check fuel pin travel

custom cut cone

Turbo (or cheep fix, the 16 cm housing)

POD's

Open the air box or upgrade to an intake system.

Get full travel from the pump's throttle lever and it's linkages.

Gov. spring

Turn star-wheel all the way down.

lighter diaphragm spring.

turn the smoke screw in several turns

open exhaust system

open the pump and cut down the gov. link.

and more!!!

These are all pretty simple mods and cheep too. When you get these done, then your ready for the big upgrades.

Off with you now, you got work to do... ...

... . and GET THEM GUAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott

Scott, 'tighter diaphragm spring'?? Huh, didn't know of such a critter, I know I have one in there, but didn't know about changing it. . ? Isnt a gov spring cheap?

Jimmy, trust me, once you read up on all the stickies on the top of the page, get your hands dirty a couple times, ask more questions as you go along, you won't need anyone to help you tweak your truck. Very easy to work on this engine. A year from now, you will be telling another new member how easy it is. Plenty of free fuel mods that can be done to the pump. I drove my 89 for a year in stock form, thought I was big and bad, til I installed PODS and turned the pump up, OH MY, you should've seen the look on my face, the truck scared me, I never had a clue it could pull so hard and throw me back in the seat.

STart out by reading all you can, yeah I know who wants to do that, then get to know your truck, the engine, all components of it, what they do, and you will save yourself alot of money and will have a better relationship with your truck.

I might add, find a Fleetguard filter dealer and ask for part number AH19037, that there is a BIG air filter, BHAF, remove you factory airbox, slide the intake hose onto the neck of the filter tighten clamp, place filter on fender well, more airflow, cheap about $40. Check my RR's for more pics, I think I have some on BHAF install.

Lighter AFC spring... . lighter. I made one up. I want that cone to drop ASAP!!:D And yes, the gov. spring is listed on my "cheap" mods above.

Higher cost mods;

Converter

transmission Valve Body

Clutch

HD flex plate

HX50

High Flow exhaust manifold (ATS)

aFe Pro guard filter

stud kit

Ported head and O ringed

etc. etc. etc.

-S

Scott, dont you mean the HX50 to go as the bottom of a set of twins?:D I cant see a 1st Gen using an HX50 for daily driving, but then it was a short 4 years ago no one thought an HX40 would work on a 1st Gen, or that we'd make useable 300RWHP without tons of smoke and EGTs. They'll be reminiscing about our current R&D in the near future, though, and wondering at our simplistic thinking.....

And arent these standard replacement items, as things get broke, worn out (yeah, right:-laf), or just dont flow enough air or hold enough boost? Aint that the reason for getting a 200K+ truck, so you can replace "wear items" and have a somewhat valid excuse to BOMB away?

"High Flow exhaust manifold (ATS)

aFe Pro guard filter

stud kit

Ported head and O ringed"

-DP

I think we are on the same page:D

Don't tell, but... . I could convince my wife we "need" to spend $300 on a stud kit 'cause the head gasket is old and weak.....

How do you think I got a turbo and POD's:p :p :p

"Dear", "Um..... I 'll need a high perfor... ... . ah, I mean a high efficient torque converter 'cause the old one is soooo inefficient and a new one will net returns in fuel economy"

-S

Yup, that line of thinking is what caused my divorce. Well, not exactly. She learned enough working on her own pickup that she didnt buy my BOMBing excuses as well as she used to.

-DP

"... ... . Gov. spring

Turn star-wheel all the way down.

lighter diaphragm spring.

turn the smoke screw in several turns

open exhaust system

open the pump and cut down the gov. link.

and more!!!..... "

good lord... . Scott!!! what are you thinking bud... . ;)

Starwheel DOWN???

Lighter spring???

Smoke screw down????

darn it man... can you even see the road?? the back of the truck even???

If I did that I'd have a 2000*F EGT gauge pegged just pulling out of the driveway... :D:D

SHeesshhhh..... kids... . :D:D

pastor bob... . all things in moderation..... naaaaaaa, what was I thinking... :D

Starr wheel?

I done pulled mine out. It's resting happily in my "Removed From Engine/Don't Need This No-Mo" parts bin :D

I figured it gives me . 005" more travel:D

Don't tell, but I've been tweak'n the pumps on the buses too! It's like one big play ground hereOo.

Oh yeah. Gotta tell you guys this!!!! Speak'n of smoke... ... ... ... ... ... ...

I return from this parts run, right. Park the Dodge along side the shop's overhead door. Unload the brake shoes and hop back in the truck. :)

So I'm thinking... ... MUUUHAHAHAHAHA! ;)

Line the side pipe up to the center of the shop door..... one foot on the brake, other'n to the floor... ... ... ... ... .

You should'a seen the guys scramble! Two of 'um got lodged in the side door at the same time try'n to make a run for it and... ..... "Get outta Dodge"

:-laf

I casually strolled on in after parking the truck to find them setting up fans..... got an ear full of it too:-{} :D

Kinda looked like a Norfolk & Western steamer just rolled on through.
