well i finaly got my 98 12v auto converted to a 5spd and it is working great so far. but theres a few minor details that need to be adressed. it runs and drives great but now i dont have any gauges at all, and the dome lights wont turn on when you open the door, but they work when you turn them on by the knob. the fuel gauge hasnt worked right for a while and the speedo has a bad wire in it from before but the rest of the gauges make me wonder, i am going to check the crank sensor today and hope that make the tach and oil work, i would like to see the coolant and voltage work too.

mjoppie,

Your conversion sounds like it will work for you. :D

Best of luck with it. :)

So was it difficult to remember "not to shift":-laf that caused you to change ? :-laf

Let us know how it is when completed.

well so far its awsome! i love it, its timed a bit high but not bad, and i love to shift, but the habbit to grab D is there :-laf i still cant find out why my gauges wont work, no gauges at all and the miles meter blinks while it runs??? if i could figure out the gauges i would love it. its way easier than it sounds to do, just a few parts and its done, easy and cheap to do, half the cost of a auto and the looks through town are awsome, i can remember what it was like now. some 215's should help the bottom end a bit next weekend.

no i didnt, but that makes a lot of sense. but why would the tach not work? when i had the transmission out i started the truck and it worked but then after my timing was set it wasnt working, and i checked the crank wire. i need at least a tach or speedo to know how fast i am going. could it be a fuse? its not a big one under the hood so i was going to check the dash fuses today and hope its just one of those.

matt

Did you set the gap for the crank sensor?? Might try that, new sensor. Did you pull the wires a little tooo hard maybe??

Curtis

tell us what route you took? used or donor parts for the trans. and what about pedal, clutch linkage, cylinders, drive shafts etc.

I have researched several posts on here and have had the idea in the back of my mind. just wondering about the total cost?

If i do mine i will do the work myself. any suggestions from what you've learned?

i had the pedals and transmission, just rebuilt my clutch and a new clutch cyl assy. it was very easy and everything fit from the other truck, the only thing i needed was a t-case inputd shaft. i havent put the front d-shaft in yet. if i could figure out the gauges i would be happy.

CEdwards,

I just swapped mine on a 1995 2WD. I found a fellow on MO that had a '94 that was totaled in a rollover accident. I got everything from him for $1500. I bought a new SBC Con O and paid a friend $350 dollars to do the clutch and transmission install. I installed the pedals. I have about $2700 total in mine. You will not need a different PCM. Everything works, cruise included, with the auto PCM. Wiring was a little tricky. I had to remove the bulb from the transmission temp running light. The front part of the drive shaft (remember I have a 2WD) was not the same. Try to get the drive shafts from the donor also.

I'm glad I did it. I picked up 3 MPG and I have a setup that will hold the power increases I have planned.

well i found out why my gauges stopped working, there was a plug under the dash discontcted :-{} what a pain in the rump. but now it all works good and i love it. the 4500 is a bit stinky but i belive that is due to not having a vent tube on it yet. next is to turn the gov springs in 1 click ( doesnt reach 3k that easy) and throw in my 215's. who knows it might be reciving twins soon :-laf if it is at 17* do you think that fuel milage would suffer? i didnt think it would but it might be. i guessed it to be getting right around 20 right now if i keep my foot out of it, but i havent caculated it yet. i am thinking that 15. 5 would be a bit more street friendly so i will try to retard it a bit, too lagy on the bottom, not horrible but noticible.

matt

Good job matt. Can't wait to see the "work truck" dyno again. This time with the manual.

Try putting the 215's in before you retard the timing. You may like it better that way. How's the truck drive so far ??

Congrats

Curtis

yes i planned on doing the injectors before timing, tossed the idea of bolting that ht3b laying in the kitchen on Oo. but for the sake of the hg i prolly wont. man i got the bug!! i wanna go see everyone  maybe this weekend i will get the 215's in and see how it runs. i just want good fuel milage (driving 160+ miles a day  ) cost me almost $20 a day to drive :--) oh well.

matt

How's about i borrow that HT3B and break it in for ya ??

I'll need it in about 3 weeks, 4 tops. ;)

Expensive truck. $20 a day would really wound my wallet.

Good Luck

Curtis

i might be able to break it in :D and 20 is cheap a day, last year it was almost $40!!! ( that was a few hundred miles a day) i sure hope to see some good runnin trucks down there Oo.

is it may yet??

Matt,

I went through the 28th overpass the other day. What color is your truck? The only Dodge I seen parked was a black, 3500, ext cab.

yep, thats mine! i took the stacks off for a tailpipe because its quiet. how do you like our little project? :-laf right now were just on the south ramp. i didnt even see your truck, should have give a rev as you drive by. i also spanked a 00 storker with a 90hp chip in it Oo. it was my bosses, they will never learn.
