Matt, I have a 96 12v auto trans and would like a manual. Was going to sell this one until I signed up for this sight and read your thread. Any chance you can e-mail a list of parts required to do the conversion? I'm sure having a doner is the easiest thing to have for the parts but are there any that have to come from elsewhere? Thanks.

Nick

first of all, welcome, its the best $35 you will ever spend

well, thers only a few things you need, and its very easy.

1) a clutch master/slave cyl unit about $250 at the dealsership

2) brake and clutch pedals

3) trans

4) t-case input shaft 29 spline

5) flywheel and clutch

thats it to make it run and drive. you will also need the shifter boot/console. i had to bend my brake light bracket a bit to make it work and make sure you have the right hyd system for your year truck (theres two, a twist in and a bolt in) theres a neutral safty wire on the auto that you will have to ground, its the middle wire in a 3 prong snap. the clutch safety wire is there just unplug it and plug your new one in. the rear driveshaft is the same but i havent got my front one in yet (bad u joint). you will love it if you do swap it. but theres one side effect, you might not have cruise, mine hasnt worked in a while, so i dont know if its from that. i did a 100 plate a set of 3k's and set it to 17* timing and its insane fast compared to before. today i broke the tires (limited slip and duals) loose and about did a 360 getting on the highway  you will still have the smaller pump like mine but its worth it to do it. if you have any questions you can call if youi want this weekend, and i can get most of that stuff for a good price too.

Hey thanks for the info Matt. Thanks for the offer to find the parts too. I live in Alaska so getting stuff here can be spendy. I will look for a doner truck here but if that dosen't pan out I'll take you up on the offer and bite the shipping. I see some parts in the classified pages but I will have to wait to set the $ aside for the project anyway. Have a better one. Nick

Hello Matt,

My auto is going out in my 95 and I have been doing some research on swapping as you have, seems to be the best bang for my buck. I was wondering if it would be alright if I called you to pick your brain? I have lots of questions, and no one around my area seems to know anything about conversions, they all say it is not worth it.

Depends

Hello Aaron, the pros and cons concerning upgrading an auto trans vs converting to a stick are many and really depend on whether you are going to pay someone to do the conversion or if you are very mechanically inclined and skilled and can do the work. Just how much power you want to have and what you use the truck and added power for [towing, sled pulling, drag racing, daily driver etc] play a big factor in the decision too.

Matt is an extreme on the side of being mechanically inclined and skilled. He will take on a new project and get it done or at least operable in the time most of us just start to form a plan. But he is an exception. I also don't think he sleeps much!!

If you are able to get a donor truck, and can do the job yourself, then I would say that this may be the best way to go. But if you are paying someone to do the work then I have to say forget it. You will have as much or more in the swap than in an automatic upgrade.

And unless you do each and everyting to turn the truck from auto to stick, including the speedo cluster, steering column etc. the truck will always look like it was 'hacked upon' and unfinished. And resale value will suffer greatly.

An upgraded auto can handle pretty much any power you want to apply through it. If you want to say the same thing about a stick shift, then you have to do the input shaft, upgrade the fifth gear and shaft, and of course buy and install a premium clutch [$$] at the same time. Then and only then are you equivalent to an auto trans with all the proper upgrades.

If you are in the Michigan area, I would encourage you to contact Matt, and see what he can show you it took to do the job, then contact me and let me show you what goes into a good auto transmission. Then hopefully you will have some extra info to make your decision with.

Hope this helps, Greg L

greg, thank you very much. as for the swap, its not hard and would be costy if you didnt have 99% of the parts to do it with, to be honest, i wanted a dtt so bad i almost sold my kid on the black market to get one. i know for a fact that if i had the money for a dtt my truck would still be a auto. i was in a big pinch and had 72hrs to make a choice on what to do... quit work or put in the manual, it was done the night before i went to work. i like it, it does get old shifting all the time in town, but its a price i payed. i truly belive that you would be happier with one of gregs autos, but feel free to call me anytime if you want (517) 652-3266
