My baby has arrived. I've been waiting years.

03' 3500 QC DRW HO 6SPD LARAMIE, SILVER, 3. 73, POSI, TOWING, TOWING MIRRORS, HOOD PROTECTION, & HOT SEATS.



And now my first problem: rolleyes:

I spoke with DMV. They said I could register a DRW as a passanger vehicle (I hope this is true)if i had a hard cover on the box. This seems strange because I don't ever remember seeing a DRW with Passanger Plates but I shure could use it like that, considering the roads I travel most.

The problem is that the whole reason I bought it was to have a slide on camper. and I would need something that could be easily removed (My wife only weighs 125 and 5' not too much help in the taking off catigory). It would have to satisfy the regulations and would like it to be as reasonable as possible

Any suggestions????

I will probably pick it up on wednesday and need to decide how to go. commercial or not.

why do you want to go passenger? it's cheaper in mn to go "ya" (commercial). probably the other way around for you?



i wonder why a bed cover would matter... sounds kinda fishy... i'd start researching your state's registration guidelines just to be sure.

... and if you take the cover off will you be fined? Do they actually step from behind the counter and take a peek at your truck (I'm sorry, passenger vehicle ) before they give you your tags?



Never heard of this hard cover/passenger classification thing. Sounds really odd.

Not really odd, a cover prevents towing HEAVY loads and limits the amt that can be carried. This was the logic I ran into in other states that did this. Some of the states, tho, if caught w/o the cover would fine BIG time (I think Hawaii was one of them but unsure). Another might be Kommiefornia - with the pass desig avail. Here in NM I can get the lower "class" wt tags but only the class that the unloaded (factory/curb) wt falls in. Can save some pennies but not worth it if you gonna haul a lot (no way to tell by the tag, so pretty safe to do).

According to New York State law:

Modifications to change from Commercial Class to Passenger Class:



Pickup Trucks: You can register a pickup truck in the passenger class if the pickup truck meets all of these requirements (Part 106. 6 (c)):



The truck has an unladen weight of more than 5,000 lbs.

The truck is used for non-commercial purposes.

The truck does not have any business advertisements.

A permanent camper top completely encloses the truck bed with one or more side windows in the camper top.

The truck has seats, seat fittings or permanent camping equipment mounted in the truck bed. "Camping equipment" indicates that you have a bed, stove or refrigerator in the vehicle at all times. If you use the truck with the equipment removed, you must register the truck as a commercial vehicle.

DMV cannot examine your vehicle to determine the correct registration class. Registration in the correct class is your responsibility.

Sounds like a major pain in the rumpus to me if you want to slide a camper in. The only other way to register as passenger is to be under 5000 lbs.

The way I read the law, unless you permantly mount the truck camper to the truck, you would have to register commercial. You will be way over 5000# unlaiden weight.



On the other hand, it appears as though you are in the City (sorry, I consider anything south of Hudson, NYC). You are close enough to "downtown" that the you may run into the commercial parking restrictions and parkway restrictions.

In New York a truck has to be under 5000 lbs to go on the PIP, Saw mill etc. At the tolls you will paid as a class 4 with DRW.

a while back (and still may be true) here in the land of the fruits and nuts and tree huggers,dmv thieves etc you could put passenger plates on a truck with less than 8000 GVW BUT if you have so much as a box in the bed you are in violation... . things may have changed now... having as much as a piece of paper now would probably constitute a fine!!... I like having commercial plates so in case I cant find a parking spot (i own a dually) I can park in the loading zone!!

I just thought of another reason to keep commercial plates.



If I recall correctly, during the gasoline crisis in the '70s, when gas was rationed on the basis of odd or even numbers on your plate, commercial plates were exempt from this rationing.



Am I remembering this correctly? I don't know if deisels were effected by this, but given the fuel situation experienced these past few months, I can forsee this happening again.

In Massachusetts they started letting pick-ups reg as passenger when I lived there (1992-95) Then they opened the third harbor tunnel (The Teddy) and lo and behold, COMMERCIAL PLATES ONLY were allowed in the Teddy! Dunno if it's still that way, I got out of MA ASAP and got to Texas!

OK! This is the way it turned out

It is my understanding from the dealer that since it is a quad cab it qualifys as having the seats and windows in the back, that all I needed was to put a hard top over the box. I didn,t read it that way though.

Well, I have been looking for and planning getting this truck for such a long time, that when I said it, about a month ago, my niece said," she would believe it when she saw it". Now I have a very large family and we are all getting together for my nephew's graduation this weekend and I haven't told a soul, It would also have taken some time to get a suitable cover and have it painted. I just went ahead and put commercial plates on it and I could always change it later on.

Went through my first toll usually . 50 just cost 1. 00 and the toll taker said wait till you go over the tapanzee. e-z pass commuter rate 1. 00 - DRW rate $9. 00:{ I wonder if passenger plates would cure that problem, then does it qualify as not being a truck?

Anyway, took it up state to look at campers today and all I have to say is EEEEEEEooooooooOOOOOOoooEEEEEEEEEE SSSSaaaaZZZZZZaaaaaaaMMMMM holy moley there safire EEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHaaaaaa
