It's that time again!!

I can't believe that there is already this much snow up here in the Utah mountains. What are you guys doing to get your trucks ready for winter if anything? All I've done is got new windshield wipers.

I miss those Utah snow storms.

Here are a couple more pics. . they were taken with my phone so the quality isn't that great. These trucks go so good in the snow Oo. At one point I opened the door and I was pushing the snow.

I have done a couple of things thus far in preperation for winter.



1. Since I have reached the 15,000 mile mark and I feel my truck is sufficiently broken in I recently switched the engine over to Mobil Delvac1 5w40 synthetic oil. This will definetly aid in those cold weather start ups.



2. I just waxed the truck the other day in preperation for all the road deicing agents.



3. I put a big blanket in the toolbox. I live in a pretty populous area so being stranded for any lenght of time is not much of a concern but the blanket is nice if I need to crawl under the truck or change a tire in the snow.



However, I do need to get some of those rubber covered winter wipers before the snow flies. I hate when the wipers freeze up and don't wipe well.

Yep winter is just around the corner. It was even trying to snow down here in the valley today. Maybe this might just be the year that we break the drought. Any ways I have also got the new wiper blades on the truck and had the oil changed today. Other than that the trucks ready to go. Let it snow Oo.

I don't know a lot about the area. I think that I have only drivin through there a couple of time. . Sorry not much help. . maybe somebody else can chime in.

I went out and checked if the premium seat heaters were working, they werent, so what does it take for them to work? subzero temps? I guess I'll have to stay away from Utah until I get em fixed!! :-laf :-laf :-laf

When I lived in Utah, chains for all four wheels were all I needed for winter.

Now, I just go to Hawaii (Kona on ther big Island)

I-40 is usually open all year round. Just drive it a couple days after a snow storm and you should be fine. The only time I don't like driving in the snow is when it's snowing. The drive isn't so bad, but the length it takes in TIME is what irritates me. You should have an easy drive going there, unless the property is away from the main highway, then you might want to get some chains for your wheels, unless you like the cold nights alone.

I was wondering the same. Since this is my first Diesel, I am not sure what I need to do to prepare for the frigid temperatures that are just around the corner. Look's like some synthetic oil might be a good idea. I just purchased a Buckstop bumper with 15k winch from a fellow TDR member, extension cord is ready, seat warmers work... ... ... ... ... ... Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. (I guess)

In my 98. 5 I would put 5W-30 in it during the winter months. The mileage actually improved around 10% using it. I may do it again this year, but depends on the temps outside. If it hovers around 0 degrees, it will probably go in vs. the 15W-40 they put in it now. I have never plugged in my other diesels and they started up just fine. Temperatures were in the -15 degrees.

Just to add to the heated seats statement, make sure your fuel doesn't JELL, ad addiquate additive for protection. That would be the main thing that would stop you in your tracks. BE PREPARED.

They sell winter wipers that have a rubber sheath that covers the metal part of the wiper above the blade. This keeps the ice out of the wiper pivot points.

I think Geno's had heated wiper blades for these trucks. I've got to try them this winter. Wife has them on her car and they work great. Those snow pics are really depressing me.

I drive 270 miles from Eagle River to Clear, Alaska almost every week. I try to set my truck up for the interior of Alaska as temperatures may get to the extremes. I change my oil to 5w30 synthetic, remix my coolant to 2/3 antifreeze - 1/3 water (approx -80 F), add an electric pan heater on the crankcase, use electric battery blankets, use an interior electric heater, and use synthetic oils in differentials, transmission, and transfer case. I carry a complete extra set of extreme cold weather clothing, a heavy duty sleeping bag, and a bunch of munchys. I keep a lot of tools in the truck as well as tow chains, tow straps, jumper cables, etc. I also carry a spare fuel filter. Some of my friends laugh at me fo being so cautious but just in case. I'm very cautious about the fuel I buy. It is mandantory that I get # 1. We tried the blended # 2 a few years ago but it just doesn't hack it at -60 F. I also have studded tires and four Light Force auxillary lights to help me see in the winter darkness.
