Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission troubles

Well it finally happened. I was driving to lunch today and transmission started acting up by holding 3rd gear too long so I finally let off of the throttle and it shifted. This only happened one time and then it was fine, til the drive home which is 45 miles and it happened 4 times. Then when I went out on a job site it kept on doing it repeatedly and then wouldnt go back into first gear. The transmission has been kinda acting up for a while now and has also been leaking fluid from the front pump since I have had the truck and yes I put a new front seal in it so I finally gave up. Other than ATS#@$%!, what is a good transmission and converter that is reasonable on the price. I am a dealer for Suncoast but I have been hearing alot about DTT so I am kinda wondering. I get a pretty good price on Suncoast but I want to go with what is the best and will hold up to about 600HP. I will be going with Billet Input only. Let me know what you guys think. Dam transmission took up all of my turbo money!:{ Bye-Bye SPS 62

Diesel Transmission Technology - DTT Performance Diesel Transmission and Power Accessories

Have had mine for over two years now. Had it built with only making up to 400 hp/800tq in mind, no billet stuff. even took out the billet accumilator replaced w/stock (1-2 shift was too hard for my liking) then I bumped the springs down to soften (just a bit) the 2-3 shifts. Been real pleased with service and customer support. Oh, check my signature for the most recent roll on the dyno hp/tq numbers. Yep, I'm a happy camper. And, keep in mind I pull nothing except my bigas butt and an occasional Mustang, Camaro or PowerJoke. :-laf

I went with SunCoast but I like DTT a lot too. I'm intrigued by some of ATS's features also. I wanted the new upgraded valve body that SunCoast has because my OEM transmission is showing some signs of age. The new DC487 valve body restored my transmission to better than new shifting. Nice and solid now, and the new 3 disc TC with the lower stall settings is just perfect for my needs. I'm a happy camper. See my signature.

I bought their TC & DC487 & 1-2 band upgrade kit to go in my OEM transmission w/116k miles.

I have a Suncoast, wish I had gone ATS though. All the shifts are hard, as expected, but overdrive/lockup is so hard it will bounce the truck, you can see it lurch from outside the truck when it shifts and it has bounced stuff off where it was sitting!!! All Suncoast will say is this is normal, it will soften up when I put my Jammer III's in (which are only about 40hp more than what I have now, don't see them making that big of a difference). I have been told this shift is hard enough that it will eventually cause drive line damage!!! To top it all off, one time when I called I was treated very rudely on the phone!!! It's sad Joe Webb is not around anymore, r. i. p. Joe!

I see you have the RV275's in your truck. Not sure if that would make a difference on that or not, but will be finding out next week when I install them in my truck. Right now, I am finding that my truck is running out of air above 2200 or so. It pulls real good up to that point and then kind of feels like it is running out of steam. Suspect it is defueling as Haven't installed the boost fooler yet or the elbow. I'm going to set that at 30 psi.
Should help a bit.

Just doing one thing at a time so that the incremental changes can be noted. Really uncomfortable with just throwing in a lot of stuff and then wondering "what happened"?

As of now, the TC locking up is not too harsh for me. Solid and noticable, but not a lurch as you describe.

The 275's should be good for 40-60 hp on your truck. You do need a boost fooler and elbow, you are limited to 20psi without it and that is why you run out of air.

I went with a full transmission, billet parts, maybe that is the difference, or maybe something is wrong.

125,000 on mine since it was converted. Some long hard hot pulls (westbound out of death vally pulling a 26ft with slide out and trk loaded) No problems. Works as good as the 1st day it was installed. Customer service is beyond reproach. See my sig for what I have. :)

They said that the VB is a modified version out of a 2003 48RE. Today everything is working fine but I just have to be very easy with the pedal when in 3rd gear. The VB has only been in the truck about 5 months. I hope that they might test it and use it in the new transmission if I decide to go with them.

I took a look at the DTT website and I realize that you get what you pay for but does the price that they show for a performance transmission include the torque converter cause if not then they are about $1200 higher than Suncoast for just the transmission. I want to get the best but dam that is a little high.

I have been half heartedly looking for my next transmission. And was wondering the same thing.

I keep adding to my current one but it just won't die. Waiting for my OPIE output shaft to show up. That is the first part to fail so far. :p

Has BD TC, VB and Pressure lock which was a waste of time and money in my book "But it still works" I know because it feels like it pulls the accelerator pedal down on upshifts but it just gets light I think.

STP,

From reading your posts, it seems to me that maybe your tps is bad, not the transmission. It won't go into lockup unless you back of the throttle and won't shift down to 1st unless you come to a complete stop? If so it may only be a TPS/APPS, could save you some $$. Give Bill at DTT a call, he'd know for sure and isn't going to try to sell you something you don't need.

Well to be perfectly honest with ya. When the problem started happening I kinda got a little PO'ed so I found the nearest parking lot and brake torqued the heck out of it. That is the only time that it didnt want to shift back down to first afterwards. LOL. Its not the lockup that it doesnt want to go in. It is the gear before lockup. I have always had a problem with it wanting to hunt for 2nd gear also if I am going kinda slow. My main concern is the leak out the front of the transmission. If it sits for about 4 hours it will leak a puddle about the size of a piece of paper. I pulled the transmission out and put a new front seal in but it still didnt fix it. I kinda wonder if I dont have a front pump problem.

Anyone know why the price is so much higher?

Call me if you want since I believe we are not allowed to post. . forum rules. I will give you all the info you need but if you goin for 600 hp input and front drum are nessesary for you app. 786-543-9176 I kow it is sunday but I will be up for a while.

1 year later with ATS rebuild...

About 20K miles/1 year ago I rebuilt my 47RE transmission on my 01 with ATS stuff (5-Star converter, valve body, pan, mega overhaul package) and while it has it's good points, there are some complaints that I have since the rebuild.

1) As BTowler mentioned for his Suncoast trans, I have the firm shifts which are normal, and mine too has that extremely hard Overdrive/Lock-up shift that jars the entire truck.

2) If I let my truck sit for awhile then suddenly start it up and throw it into gear right away (example: Reverse), it feels as if the TC clutch is engaged and tries to stall the truck out and then suddenly it's released. When it's cold out, I do the same sit-for-awhile-start-it-up-immediately-throw-into-gear thing, only this time the transmission stays neutralized, then suddenly dies out, so I start it in, put it back into gear, do it again, and dies again from the lock-up. I have to leave it in Neutral for some time and then put it in gear, which being me to this:

3) Doesn't pump is park. If I've done my research correctly, it should pump in park as it would in neutral and you can check your fluid level and everything, but it sure doesn't seem that way, seeing as how the fluid looks aerated and its pretty much at the same level its at when the truck is off.

4) Won't down shift from 3rd to second at low speeds unless A LOT of throttle is given. I checked my adjustments to my throttle cable, checked with TPS/APPS sensor with a DRB and DVOM, and they are working perfectly and within specs.

That's what I've experienced with my rebuild with ATS stuff. I was very, very meticulous when I was rebuilding it (i. e. checking all clearances, end play, etc. ) and everything checked out within spec. I also followed THEIR instructions for installing their parts before I put the transmission back in the truck.

I believe I've narrowed it down to the valve body I got from them, and ATS isn't being helpful at all when I call them about my concerns. Also note that I don't normally throw it into gear immediately right after starting the truck, but I know good and well it shouldn't stall out, or be neutralized and then stall out when that is done, because it never did that before I rebuilt it with their stuff. EVER.

Other than those complaints, it's been running great otherwise.

By the way, long time reader, first time poster.
