The water pump runs off the smooth side of the belt, how does it not seat?

Exxxxactly. I thought the ac was a bit tricky to seat. Seems like the outside groove runs off the edge of the pulley. Serpentine belts are great but if there's an issue, they can be a nightmare.

The pulley was still attached to the pump (intact), when you held the pump in your hand the pulley could be moved away from the pump about 1/4" of a inch. If the pulley had bearings in it,they failed. I wish I had the pump to take another look at it.

One would think that the coarse of events for the failures is that, once the seal between the cooling system fails it takes out the bearing. But the way that some bearings are greased now a days it could be just the opposite. Wheel bearings seem to have the smallest amount of a runny type grease that they fail just out of warranty.

But then again my truck is on it's second water pump that I have replaced, each on lasted 30k ish. I kept the receipt, and use the NAPA lifetime warranty. So no cash out of pocket. But it should last longer than that. If it goes again soon I will do the tensioner as well, maybe the tension on the belt K.O's the pump.

I've been down the road with the NAPA "lifetime" warranty. After a few more water pumps you'll be able to do them in record time.

There was a debate moons ago about coolants, weather to use full and distilled water or 50/50 etc. I refilled with GO5 Zerex 50/50 while only draining what the rad drain would give me (5gal).
We have a coolant refractometer at the job, so we went out at break to get a real deal reading since another cold snap is coming. The refractometer read -50*.

Rockauto

Gates, WP had to get gasket it didn't come with one and used a Stant Thermostat Zerx GO5 fluid and Gates belt been on for about 50k

I spend more time on the clean up of the coolant and putting away the tools. The coolant always ends up on the floor, and on the tools. First world problems I guess.

The pump is cheap enough I keep a spare in the camper. Friend had his pump go bad on a holiday weekend. He was no where close to anything but the dealer. Had to wait until dealer opened.

I replaced mine with the rebuild, and the old pump was working fine so it went in the road trip box (along with the vacuum pump that was also replaced while it still worked).
