MHO's:

The most likely damage will be from using a chain... Don't!

Get a Tow strap rated atleast 20,000 lbs. This will greatly reduce any chance of damage.

If you get the jump on him you will cause him to slip his tires. Then you will just drag him down the road.
OR You both should agree to pull the strap tight and then go otherwise the truck with the most momentum built up will cause the other lose traction. After that the race is over.

The truck with the most weight will usually win.

Lower your tires (are they stock 265's Mich)
below 25 psi if on pavement or below 20 if on dirt and below 15 if in sand.

I would use 4wd low and don't stand on it. Once your tires start spinning you lose!

I have picked up MHO's from towing 10,000 lb RV's to over 40,000 Diesel Pushers out of sand and soft dirt. I have snapped two 20,000 straps when my truck was pulling from the pavement.

I wouldn't do it. I've never done a pull-off and will profess to know little about the proper way to win one, however, there is a chance of damage to your new truck. Why take the risk if it really doesn't decide anything. Hook up a heavy trailer and do some timed runs. This would be a much better indicator of power put to the ground. All else being equal, it is your truck. Do what you will. I hope you win!!

The best pulloff is one heavy trailer and a hill. You ride with him and time him. He rides with you and times you. When it's over there's nothing to talk about #ad

However, lower your pressure, hide some weight, and pull higher than him. Comments: calcium chloride in the tires and 18-20 psi makes them stick like glue but it's a pain for one pulloff. Since this is a static pull and not a dynamic one, weight wins, period - so cheat with weight if you can. If you can invert your trailer ball stinger and pull higher than him, cool. But if he's smart he'll complain, so keep them the same height. Refuse, though, if he's higher than you.
Use a strap or well-wrapped chain. Use 4wheel-low. Good luck. Hope you don't break anything. Remember, the truck wasn't designed for this (go to the top of my post #ad

Not worth it. Dont abuse your equipment just to teach someone a lesson.

Hate to cause him to have a cackle problem, or cavitate a hole through his piston, or have his turbo fall off just trying to impress his friends... #ad

I'd just compare mileages over a nice cool corona, and hey, have some compassion for the guy. You never know when youre gonna get screwed buying an inferior product in the future... #ad

VA, DD1's, PS Boost module & elbow, BD brake... also, Nitrous Oxide piped direct into the block (stealth - to keep the warranty), 10 gallon per minute fuel pump, ECM right out of Don Garlit's Top Fueler (he gave it to me) (for letting him ride in my truck), Super Modified DD1 Injectors ("Hand Honed" with a 1/4" reamer & my 12v Makita). :) More BOMBING to come. .

I would like to be one of the few to say don't do it. Pride is not worth drivetrain repairs or a saftey issue. Let him think his Peestroke is better. We all know the truth.

My suggestion is also to hookup the same loaded trailer to each truck, and time it to a certain spot. Like a standing quarter mile, just loaded up. That is the true test of who has more power, and that is also what the trucks were designed for. They were not designed to work hard and go nowhere.

If he refuses to participate in anything other than a truck-to-truck pulloff... Tell him to hook a chain to a large tree and have fun #ad
When he twists a u-joint or causes some other damage to his truck, just say "I warned you" and offer to tow him home #ad

Why don't both of you go out to the gravel pit and load up. Find a set of scales and shovel out or in, what it takes to make both rigs the same weight. Now go find your hill and get it on. That would be the safe way. -Mundgyver-

Bigsaint is 100% right. Find a dyno and duke it out there. I personally saw the result of two 5speed trucks hooked up with a chain. One a Ford IDI 7. 3, and the other a 96 Dodge Cummins. In the end, the Ford tweaked its frame and its hitch and the Dodge broke a driveshaft yoke. Nobody won the pull, and both walked away losers.

Dumb idea! This is the kind of stuff I love to watch. My guess is that at least one of you will be walking home. If you must do it, be sure to have about $5,000 ready just in case!

My take, It will probably be a stalemate (don't ask me how I know this #ad
). The TQ converter isn't going to hookup well in either truck. Then there is the traction issue. Break traction and you're done. I would think a dyno would be a better way to go as a pull-off really doesn't prove a whole lot (don't ask about this either).
But if you must, safety is paramount!!! I wouldn't use a strap personally, I would use an alloy chain or something and then wrap it with a towel or something. I used to wrap (twist) a rope around town chains to help slow them down if they break. That seemed to work okay. Good luck!

DaveN, well the tally so far is 19 more or less in favor and 11 against a pull-off. What are yuh gonna do buddy? Personally, if it were my truck, I'd be thinkin' dyno or trailer towing competition.

Hey now, put me in the undecided crowd. I didn't say to do it, just was giving him advice on the best way to win if he wanted to. Any games like this (including dyno runs) run the risk of tearing stuff up. I run that risk every time I go off road (2 weeks till the first weekend at the dunes!! #ad
), blast down the 1/4 mile, or soon hook to a sled! I personally think there are many better ways to settle it than hooking back to back, BUT I have been known to teach someone a lesson a time or two when that was the challenge put on the table!

Just open the hoods and compare engine statistics. You've already won the most important battle.

Well guys, looks like he's going to back out on me. I was kind of looking forward to it (and a little scared at the same time) but at least now I have some ammo against him. I don't think he will ever live this one down, my friends are already ribbing him pretty bad..... who knows maybe he will have to pull off with me just to save his manliness... .

Either way thanks to everyone for the input, I will be more prepared the next time a PSD owner starts shooting off at the mouth...

I happen to be an expert on this. I have posted about it before and never got much of a response. We have tug O wars at least once a month and usually 10 to 30 trucks compete. Fact #1 a lighter truck cannot pull a heavier one, that why all trucks are weighed in on digital aircraft scales and classed in 5500lbs. ,6750, or 8000lbs. fact#2 must be in 4lo, 2wd trucks dont work because one truck can just hold their brakes. fact#3 sorry but power means absolutly nothing. We also have hitch heigh rules and tire size and type rules. It really is a fun sport but not a good way to compare engines. If any one in central Fl would like to see one of these events I could post some dates.

how did I miss this one

Don't know how I missed this tread? I can't speak for an auto but a manual is pretty mean. :)

We (my freinds and myself) have a bad habit about drinking a little beer on the weekends and that usually leads to some brand bashing and then a little pull off action. :p I've pulled on both dirt (actually mud) and pavement, and needless to say they wont let me play anymore. :( We have a pretty diverse crowd here lot of Furds a few Dodges and very few Chebys. I've pulled them all and none of my freinds trucks can stand up to the Big Blue Dodge. :D My cousin Danny has a PowerJoke with a 110hp chip and he can give me a good run for my money but still can't cut the mustard. Oo. Get a good heavy towstrap and have fun. Use 4lo that's were the Dodge and Cummins really shines and have at that Furd, he ain't got a chance. :p

We all hooked them up one night in a frozen field and did nothing but cover each others trucks in snow and mud. It was pretty fun except for the guys that left his window open. :--)

Put me down as being in favor for pull offs. Oo.

Big D

Lower your spare to the ground unhook the cable and put 3 or more 45 pound plates (used in weight lifting) on top of the tire and crank her back up. Hee Hee Hee. It ain`t cheatin if you don`t get caught, right????;) Heck for that matter take out the whole spare and stack them up.
