I CANT BELIEVE IT... ...
I've only had the truck a few months, and I already had some c-sucker (pardon my french) breaks into my truck. #ad

Yes, it had an alarm. But I bet it was just making noise as they took the Motorola radios from my glove compartment.
I will not tell anyone how they broke in on this list, nor in private, for fear someone might get some stupid ideas. #ad

But one thing is for sure, after looking over the door handle/locking mechanism, it is a TOTALLY P!$$ poor design ( and I hope someone at Dodge is reading this post)... #ad
They didn't break the window thank goodness. But I'm still out the deductable on the repair of the damage.
Please make sure you have something on the truck that doesn't allow these scumbags to take the vehicle after they get into the truck, cause it sure doesn't look too hard to break in... .
I think from now on, I'll just leave the glove and center box empty and open so they don't have to break anything to find out its empty... ... .
Sorry for the long post, and I'm going to think of some way to keep this from happening in the future, even if I have to have something fabricated ! ! ! ! !

Jesse.

Sorry to hear about break-in. John Holmes sells hardware to disable truck from starting or you can do this your self. Basically you have extra key hidden that will control power going to shut off solenoid.
Security system with beeper.
Security system thats really loud and lights flashing.
Rattle snake.
Warning sticker that warns about bomb going off if broken into. Any security sticker.
Members really need to know how they got in, so all members can help solve problem( such as John Holmes method stopping truck driving off with out owner). I agree with not posting because any one with excess to internet can read forums. But consider e-mailing members only, especially the moderators.

I locked my keys in the truck a while back and had to call the locksmith...

Using one of those slim jim things (flat metal bar) he had the door open 2 seconds after he got to the vehicle.

I was impressed by his talent, and unimpressed with the lock.

To a thief, most American cars are an invitation! And Mopar products are the bottom of the barrel from this perspective. My local dealer has a body shop. The manager told me that of the 27 vehicles waiting for repair, 23 were stolen/joyride cars... mostly Ram gassers and 300M's. He did say that its like this every summer, as the kids are out of school and have nothing to do but steal cars and have a fun police chase! Because of the bleeding-heart legal system, the kids are slapped on the wrists and let go... leaving us with big insurance costs and inconvenience... blame it on the ACLU and the liberals!

It's very easy to get into these trucks,or any other with a sliding rear window. You can pop the latch with a hacksaw blade or a thin knife.

My '96 had a sliding rear window. It was used twice in 3 yrs. Once by my friend who had to get in to the bed - he had to pee, I wouldn't pull over, we had just passed 3 motorhomes climbing a grade on Hwy 95 in Nevada - and once by the guy that tried to break into my truck.

My '00 does not have a rear slider.

Missouri Mule,

What's this hardware that John Holmes sells, and how do I reach him? I disturbed some fellows who were about to climb up into my truck bed at a shopping center not too long back. I'm sure they weren't admiring the line-x job!

Thanks.

There is a cheap and easy way to secure the rear sliders. Get a small diameter wooden dowel that will fit down in the slider track. Cut to fit and paint 'em black. Real easy to remove if you want to open the window and if you paint them, you won't even know they are there.

With a permanent headache rack, at least I don't have to worry about the rear window. One thing that I would like is a remote control shutoff of some kind. When I stop for coffee, I often let the truck idle a few minutes rather than shut it off hot. If I saw some scum get into the truck, I could kill it before he even could get it in gear. I suppose I could always just lock it with my spare key.

Forget the beeper security thing, they usually have a few look outs to take what you've got on you as well. I'm not that eager to be gutted.
Buddy had a security system hooked to the horn and lights, didn't help. During a good hail storm a night shift worker came out to the honking, blaring truck and proceeded to beat the windsheild in with a bat.
There was a deal somewhere that a guy makes a steel shroud that goes around the lock in the door so you can't hook the lock with a slim-jim. Cheap fix, just don't lock your keys in.
Kill switch, cheap insurance and simple to wire on older trucks.

edit: There was a fuse I mentioned earlier, tested it on the truck here at work.
The bugger lied to me. All it did was disable the horn and interior light, not the ignition. Sorry for the false information. #ad

QRTRHRS,I bought a Valiant remote starter, key less entry from JC Whitney, cheap $39, but 6hrs to install. Besides starting/stopping& lock/unlock from 300 ft it also allows your rig to run for 10 or 20 minutes before shuting down. If the brake is pushed or the hood opened the unit shuts down if the key isn't inserted. It also can be programed to start your rig at your choice of intervals for your choice of time to keep your car warmed up if you are away from a 110 plug when it's cold. Even has a diesel option switch for the wait to start. I was amazed at all the things this $39 electronic marvel could do,I just bought it for the keyless entry, but ended up wireing up the works when I saw what it would do. Remote has a third button for opening the trunk,I wired it to the horn relay because my truck didn't come with a trunk,it's always fun to hit the Grovers when somebody is eyeing my truck.

illflem,

Thanks for the info but I have a 5 speed. Maybe I could just use it for the above mentioned emergancy shutdown though.

I was violated the other day by some punk who just wanted my radio. He unplugged my Valentine 1 detector to get the cord out of the way so he could pry on the radio. Totally messed up the radio, but didn't get it out (I installed it). Left the truck without taking anything else.

Many moons ago,( Mid 70's) in my youth, I knew a fella who had his VERY expensive stereo stolen from his car. .

We lived in San francisco and the cops DO NOT respond for those minor crimes.

Well he was a little pissed to say the least and got even. He installed the same type stereo back in his car, but attached several window scraper glass razor blades( with the thick edge) to the rear of the radio, where Mr. Thief would have to grab it from. .

You guessed it... . About 3 weeks later, Mr. Thief returned, busted the same wing window and was 1/2 way thru when he/she grabbed the rear of the stereo and got the blades. . #ad

A small trail of blood from the scene to around the corner and no problems after that. .

NOW, I don't recommend you do this of course. . This was for entertainment purposes ONLY!

Not to mention, you would have to give the crook your Truck after he sued you and won. . #ad

When I got my truck in 96 I was working at Douglas Long Beach for my Airline and I flew home weekends from LAX. I never had a problem but I kept the Club on the wheel and pulled the start and fuel relays from under the hood and tossed them in my carry-on when I left it parked in the Lot for the weekend. Like I said, I never had a problem but I felt better knowing the relays were with me. Dave

Instant karma story. While visiting So. Cal. ,a few years back,I pulled off the side of the Pacific Coast Hwy to peek over the bluffs at the surf. Wasn't gone 5 minutes, when I returned to my truck to find a guy laying on the floor working under the dash. When I opened the passenger door he bolted out the drivers side straight into the side of a van going 60 mph. Although it didn't kill him I'm sure he wished it did,he was in very bad shape,I pressed charges on him also. The dumass broke the window to get in even though the doors were unlocked.

Bugout - I have a story very close to that. I had a friend in high school that had a 57 Chevy. The radio installed from inside the dash (you went in through the glovebox to get to it). He had one stolen and we decided that wasn't going to happen again. Basically we set up a snare inside the dash with barbed wire where you couldn't see it and that you could put your hand through but not get it back out. The next time a guy tried to steal the radio we came out to the parking lot to find him sitting there the in car with his arm in the dash. #ad

Get 2 wooden dowels that are the same diam. as the sliding window track, so they will lay into this track, cut them so the window can not open, but tape around one end so there is a "tab" you can grab onto to remove them, and lay them in the slots. Instant window lock! (for about $1. 00)

Steve, you must have been following Doc around in your youth #ad
. By the way hows ole Goose Creek (Grosse Ile - NAS). Know the base closed way back when. Was there in 62-65. Lost a car in Trenton and took the cops forever not to find it (we did the next weekend - behind the PD station). Is there a Shell station on the east side just north of the PD yet? OH whell the ole memories die hard!

When I have to park my truck in a scary place, I remove the little 10-AMP fuse marked ENGINE. I stick a burnt throw-down fuse in the slot. Guaranteed NO-START condition. (Found out the hard way! #ad
) Since the fuse box is right there on the dash, it takes a couple of seconds.
