I just went over to Cummins NW here in Portland and they had a Cummins Tool Kit I couldn't pass up on... . They only have about 9 left and with a Power Booster Card they're ONLY $32+. They are KD Tools made here in the good old US of A and have the timing ratchet which according to the folks at Cummins NW is almost the cost of the kit. I'm attaching a couple of photos. Now I need some expert help on adjusting the valves... ...

I see a couple of interesting items in there. Could you explain what some of them are for. I have never, hopfully never will, torn down my engine so... I am thinking the "band" is for oil filters? What is a timing ratchet? I see something which is like a very large torq head socket? $32 for any specialty tool seems like a deal and with all the standard tools in the kit makes it seem even more sweet.

Thanks,

OK here goes ---

You bet - I'll try - but for your info - look at this site for a 9" flexible K_D 3/8" ratchet - http://www.toolsource.com/ost1/prod...1603&mscssid=1BDDUWGLTVS92GDU00J74FSANHHG1UG7 they want $44/95 for a 9 1'2" and this one is larger than that - unless you only measure it to the flex joint.

1. Top left is a KD part no 2274 Metric Feeler Guage - from . 04 to 1. 0 mm

2. 3/8 6 pt sockets - 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 & 19 mm also a 3/8' to 1/2" adapter

3. KD # 72143 3/8" flexible ratchet

4. 14 & 15 mm 12 pt wrench

5. small flat screw driver

6. Timing Torx Socket for turning the engine over to get the engine on TDC etc for adjusting the valves.

7. 6" 3/8 extension

8. Oil filter wrench.

the timing torx socket is a barring tool. it a lone from cummins is $32. 00. looks like you got a good buy. ENJOY

Marv.

Hammersly , Do you have a part # , ..... I'm sure any of the Cummins stores would be able to get the kit or order it don't you think ? Look's pretty handy Oo.

Hammersley,

You got a screamin' deal on that kit. I bought one back when I bought my truck, in 96, and if I remember right, it was about $100 more than what you paid. It's paid for itself a few times, though.

The Cummins folks told me

that they had found a lot of extra cummins parts and had a company put them together and that there were no more available... .

I wonder what the price is to non-members of the Cummins Booster Club? I let my membership lapse a couple of years ago.

I would should like to have that barring tool though! :D

What is so special about a 3/8 flex head rachet?

After you use one you'll know. I have a Snap-On I got as part of a set of ratchets when I was a kid (thanks Dad) and it's very good to have on hand. Some mechanics I know use them as their normal ratchet.

SK are good tools. Unlike Crapsman, they rarely break. They do have a lifetime guarantee incase you do wreck one.

Hammersley, would you PM me, I want to see if I could get you to pick me one up, THANKS.

Last time I changed the transmission fluid I needed to rotate the engine to get to the T/C plug. Would be useful for that plus the other goodies.

John... Check with Cummins NW... If you were ever a member of the booster club, you still are. They quit renewals a while ago. At least that's how it is for Cummins NW in Renton... :)

Doesn't Cummins - or anyplace else - offer a tool that helps you with the actual adjustment part of the valve lash job?

Wasn't there a little tool that helped you keep the clearance value you've reached - while you torque down the nut?

Matt

Hammersley, can't get to you your mail box it is full, I want the kit if you can get one, will send you information when your mail box is available.

Paid 35 clams for mine out east here at our local Cummins shop with our chapter discount. Still is a rocking tool set,the debarring tool is that much alone most places... ... . Andy

Hammersly, I was sorta hinting about that in my earlier post ( :D ) Any chance you could see your way to helping out a fellow TDR member and Washingtonian?

I know, I know, I'm shameless. :D

I sure could use that barring tool! And the rest of that tool kit too.

Ok My Mail Box is now empty

I didn't realize that I had to clean out the SENT items in my mailbox - I hadn't even looked at that - but was instructed by Bill Fleming - so Now I can check you folks... ... . I coach Men and Women's High School Soccer, and here in Washington the girls play in the fall - we have a game this AM - but I'll check with Cummins and see how many of the tool kits are left.

Sorry about the confucion on the PM's.....
