Question for the Alaskans

I don't know how it happened, but I think I have the W32/KELZ worm. I did a full recovery and it's still there. It won't let me run my new VirusScan 6. 0- or recieve any new updates. I made a emergency boot disc, and it won't run (said I don't have enough memory). It seems as though the files affected are needed to power up and down since once it's up it runs fine, like now. If I take any action to get rid of it, it will kill the program or lock up.

I did change the antivirus command line in DOS as per McAfee, and it seems to let the program run longer, but it still gets killed.

I once read about a method where you hit the f8(?) key while booting up, and it would kill the virus, but I can't find it now that I need it.

Any help is appreciated, please speak in laymans terms since there are no wrenches involved.

Thanks!

myself, I've had bad luck in the past with McAfee. I went to Norton years ago and it hasnt failed me yet.

Have you looked at Norton's AV site and see if there is a tool to rid you of the KELZ worm. NAV commonly produces tools and methods independant of their software to fix and clean a system infected. Sometimes with a real nasty the virus, there is nothing you can do but a low level format and start all over again.

The f8 key is just to stop windows from loading and cause a menu to appear for booting options. At times depending on the virus, if you boot directly into DOS(16 bit) through this method, some viruses wont run since they are only 32 bit and only run when windows gui enviroment is running.

The f8 key doesnt kill the virus, just stops some from loading.

Klez tool

Hey Wayne, just used the klez removal tool on my Mom's computer. Worked like a charm. I'm not real computer savy but the instructions for using the tool were spot on and Mom's 'puter is virus free now.

Happy Mother's Day to Mom

( I also upgraded her virus protection to Norton as a gift)

Wayne M,

If you push F8 while the computer is booting up. , before you get the windows screen, just keep hitting the F8 key after you turn on the computer until you get the manual startup screen, this will let you go through start up line by line and help you troubleshoot the problem. It will not kill the virus, it will do nothing with the virus, It's only for a line by line startup troubleshoot. hope this helps.

Ya know, I could always count on you guys for the real deal. The Symantec deal did it for me! I'm starting to realize that my McAfee stuff is junk. I think I'm gonna try to return it and get Norton. I had to use F8 to get into safe mode to make this work.

Thanks again!

I'm having problems getting the firewall to work, and the scan for virus takes forever! I've been looking for my local guru "friends", and I found a couple after I bought virussacn, and they told me I shoulda got Norton. Seems to be a common opinion. Judging how thrie kelz fix worked- I'm impressed!
