2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Jacked up ball joint

How does the hole get 'wallowed out'? I may have a found a replacement upper control arm, but while I had the wheel pulled I noticed the PO had the lower ball joint welded too. :-[

PS - There's no cotter pin, either. It's welded, right?

I hear you on that. When I got mine I practiced on sheet metal then progressed up to heavier. But to weld a bj ....
