Anyone see the price for the new jake brake for automatics? I have the part number as 82209823, and can not find a price anywhere. Just curious if anyone has it yet and how do you like it?

I checked w/ my dealer locally and they quoted me 1290 dollars approx. Now the bad news, the Jake breke will only work w/ the 2006 48Re auto. Cummins cnfirmed this as well. Let me know if you have any different info. I have the 2004. 5 48re and have been looking forward to this upgrade for quite spmetime

First it's not a jacob's brake, It's an exhaust brake, a "jake brake" is built into the heads to close off exhaust valves, an exhaust brake(like what we can get on out trucks) just builds up back pressure. Sorry I've just seen to many people misusing the word "jake brake". :: Stepping off my soapbox:: and what is the difference between the 04 48re and the 06?

It is a JACOBS brake when it is maufactured by JACOBS- That is where the term "jake brake" comes from. An ENGINE BRAKE like a cummins c-brake or Jacobs engine brake is what is usually referred to as a "jake" The Mopar/Jacobs exhaust brake is only approved for use on 06 trucks because of a slight hardware change and a different computer program that is not available for 04. 5 trucks. Stepping down off MY soapbox now :)

If you go here jake brake you'll see that Jacobs refers to their engine brake as a "Jake" brake but to the brake that fits our trucks as a Jacobs exhaust brake.

isn't that what I said in the second/third line of my post

I stand corrected. . I wasn;t aware that the new exhaustbrake for our trucks was made by jacobs, I was refering to everyone with the bully dog or the banks brake or who ever saying they have a "jake brake" when they really don't

Below is a quote from the Cummins Newslater E-Mailed yesterday. It does say that the exhaust brake comes with a software update to keep the TC locked up longer. Also note the 2004. 5 - 2006 dates. I hope it is not a misprint.

The Jacobs Exhaust Brake is backed by a comprehensive 3-year/100,000-mile (160,934 km) warranty on the exhaust brake assembly, with a 3-year/36,000-mile (57,936 km) warranty on all other kit components.

You can purchase the Jacobs Exhaust Brake as a dealer-installed option. Plus, you can even finance your exhaust brake with your new truck purchase. Ask for these part numbers at your Dodge dealer or Cummins distributor:

Model Year Cummins Part Number Mopar Part Number

2003-2004 (manual trans. ) 4089427

2004. 5 –2006 and later (includes 2006 automatic transmissions) 4955192 82209823

Also note the 2004. 5 - 2006 dates. I hope it is not a misprint.

It's not a misprint. The kit works with 2004. 5 - 2006 models with manual transmissions and 2006 with automatic transmissions. You are still SOL.

I heard that it will work in the 05 transmission AFTER a software upgrade and some internal transmission work as well, didn't sound like much work, replacing a band I think... . I'll have to see if I can find that again.

The latest TDR magizine said that the 05 and 06 48re trannys were the same and the computers are the same only the 05 computers did not have the needed software loaded on them . Page 35 of issue 49. I hope they decide to offer this to us 05 owners after dangling this carrot out in front of us. Come on DC make it easy on us for once!

Hey they have been dangling that carrot in front of us 04 owners for two years now. I bought my 2004 because I could install an exhaust brake, only to find out that they can not do that, and do not have a fix for my 04... ...

Latest TDR magazine has info on Jacobs exhaust brake that states that the 2005-2006 48RE transmission is capable of handling it while the 2003-2004. 5 are not. Something to do with a new coating on a thrust washer so it can better handle reverse torque on the transmission. It apparently still has a problem related to non-lock-up of the torque converter (and the resulting heat generation) that is solved in the 2006 model with some ECM programming changes. I'd think with a transmission temperature gauge you could monitor the transmission yourself until an ECM change comes out to fix this for the 2005 model year.

Gee - can't you replace the thrust washer while you put some other goodies in a 04. . like a SUncoast/DTT plate, valve body. . :-{}
