I had my E brake installed at the dealer before I picked it up. The brake operates a lot "smarter" than the one on my 2000. The brake will come on at stand-still idle when the engine is cold, but will turn it's self off at a stop light when it is warm. I have not ran it long enough at cold idle to see if it would turn off when water temp rises. If it does, I like it.

If it is setup correctly. It will. They have a coolant temperature sensor.

It should also turn itself back on if the water temperature falls during an extended idle.

Mine never turns itself off with the temp, it is always on. It is one of the first ones out and I believe I rear that I can get it reprogramed to work right, just never bothered to check in on it.

Starting in MY2003, the engine control software implemented a feature to turn off the exhaust brake when coolant temperature reached a pre-determined level. The brake turns back on when coolant temperature falls.

For MY2003, this temperature was 220 degrees F, which is pretty high. For MY2003. 5 vehicles (on sale in January 2003) and later, the temperature was dropped to 175 degrees F before the exhaust brake turns off.

Hope this helps!

Ours never turns off except with the manual switch. It would be handy if it turned off after warmed up, but it sounds like we would need special software and hardware to activate that feature. Cummins Installed it, thought they would activate those features. :(

Carlton, do you know if there's any way Dodge can reflash the ECM to change an early 2003 to switch the brake off at 175*? I've gotten pretty good at manipulating the switch when I stop, but the automatic shutoff sure would be nice.

And BTW, thanks again for all the great info here! (your update on the status of the 48RE/Jake compatibility for '04 was awesome info to deliver straight to the consumer)

Carlton: Add me to the list of folks that would like to know about the reflash, sure there are many more. My truck was built in Oct 2002.

I know a reflash is theoretically possible but I'm not sure if it is planned for that feature. I'll check with the controls group to see if there are any upcomming changes planned and to see if the temp change can be implemented. I general, it's difficult to get changes in but I'll give it a try!
