I have a 2001 CTD with the high output engine and the 6 speed manual. It is still under the Cummins warrantee. I will towing in the next year or two and wanted to install an approved exhaust brake.

In 2004 Dodge pulled the Jacobs exhaust brake, advising the dealers to quit installing it.

Recent inquiries to the dealer were met with "who knows". I emailed Dodge, and they said they would research my question and get back to me. That has been about 10 days. What is the deal? will I have to get a Banks unit, and possibly void my warrantee?

Thanks

I had Cummins install mine on my Y2K. The give you a 100K, 5 year warrenty on the brake and engine. Who needs the Dodge dealer, Go talk to them :)

The Dodge unit is a Jacobs Exhaust Brake, it even comes with a Jacobs Sticker with a MOPAR Star on it.

Your year vehicle and setup are approved to utilize a Jacobs Exhaust Brake, and no, the dealer does not have to install it. I ordered mine when I ordered my truck, put it on right around day one, and have had no problems with it. It was a simple install (around 3hrs) and has been the VERY BEST investment I could have ever put on my truck.

I bought my mopar jake brake on ebay Mopar stickers on everything. It was a fun and easy install. I did build a bracket for the switch and put it on the stick. I put a piece of foam between it and the stick to stop vibration. I finaly wraped a piece of electrical tape around the switch and the stick no more rattle.

I love just towed the fver to pa and back and I loved it...

I put a Jacob's brake on my truck last fall that I bought right from my local Dodge dealer. I get along good with the parts man and ended up getting the brake for 600 plus tax and installed it myself in 2 hours. The only thing I recommend is pulling your IAT sensor every 10k and cleaning it as it will soot up quickly with the brake if you use it consistently like I do. It's a pita to pull and clean but it helps greatly with mileage keeping it clean. The manual for install also has a warranty page that says it is warranteed for 100k or 5 years. IMHO the brake is the nicest thing since sliced bread and saves greatly on Dodge's crappy brake system and your wallet. I used to put front pads in every 10k until I installed my Jacob's and since then I have put on 62k and my front pads and brakes still look like new... so my Jacob's has already paid for half its cost already. Hope this helps in your decision making. Chris

Thanks everyone for their comments. IT sounds like I should bypass Dodge and get a Jacobs brake from either ebay or a Jacobs/Cummins dealer.

Every one I have talked to loves this brake

I've been considering an exhaust brake of some sort, is Jacobs the way to go, or BD, or one of the other companies? Also, we all know what a Jake sounds like on a rig, what does it sound like on our trucks?

Thanks,

R. J.

It makes a hissing sound.

Were talking about EXHAUST brakes here, not engine brakes. Jake brakes are engine brakes for semi tractors, they are not found on pickup trucks.

The exhaust brake, whether Jacobs, Banks, BD, or Pacbrake all block the exhaust with a butterfly valve. The blockage is not 100% or something bad would happen to the engine. So the gas that escapes does so through a much smaller opening, thus the hissing. It does make a different and louder exhaust noise though, but I've never heard it from outside the vehicle. It's definately not the bass stacato of a big rig jake brake in action.

The max rated retarding power for the Jacobs unit is 125 BHP. That's enough to maintain or decelerate your vehicle even going downhill with a load. It's not reverse thruster like on a jet aircraft, eg. won't slam you into the steering wheel when you hit it. If you tow at all, it's a great investment. I highly recommend the shifter-mounted switch on a manual transmission.

I too recommend going through a Cummins dealer and leave DC out of it, the exaust brake will help prolong your service brakes too, I never towed much with my 01 but I still used the exaust brake religiously. I had 80k miles on the original brake pads and they weren't even half wore out :-laf . I recommend the shifter mounted switch in Geno's its much more user friendly.

Go to http://www.mydodgeparts.com/ and do a search for "Exhaust Brake"

I picked mine up there. $631 and some change, they have great customer service. Installed myself in about 2 hours. Only thing to watch out for is that you have to go back and retorque the bolts after a hundred miles or so. I lost a bolt, no biggie but it was annoying.

Will the Mopar Jake Brake work with a 4" exhaust system? I'm going to buy a brake soon and need to know. Thanks
The Jacobs e-brake for the 2nd generation 24 valves replaces the stock cast elbow between the turbocharger and downpipe, so if your 4" downpipe has a 3. 5" section bolted to the cast elbow (like my 4" Jardine system does), you won't have any problems.

The only complaint I have with my Jacobs e-brake is that, with my mods, I need to look at turbocharger upgrades to drop EGTs a bit. If I don't want to replace my Jacobs e-brake, I'm restricted on turbo upgrades to HX35 hybrids, etc. that will still let the e-brake connect to the turbocharger's turbine housing.

RustyJC, what about the HX35 downpipe to HX40 turbo adapter. Won't that allow you to upgrade the turbo and still use your existing brake?

The Jacobs e-brake sits between the downpipe and the turbo. As I said, it replaces the stock cast elbow that fits between the HX35 and the downpipe. Therefore, for any turbocharger to work with my Jacobs e-brake, the e-brake is going to have to bolt to the turbocharger just as if the turbocharger were an HX35 on the turbine flange.

Rusty

About the only turbo upgrade possible with the 3" elbow is the Dodgezilla (I think that is the name) HX40 with 14cm housing. This has a 3" exit. I believe that this is the largest turbo available for use with the stock elbow setup.

Don't leave home without the Jacobs :D I have 143,000 turns on my original factory brakes and still have 40% of my brakes left. It is the best investment that you can make for towing. ;) along with a Jordan brake controller. ;)

Have the Jacobs on my 98. 5 6 speed and really like it. I checked the prices from Cummins and they were about $200 higher that Dodge. Did buy the gearshift mounted switch from Cummins for the 3rd gen. That dash mounted rocker switch doesn't cut it. Wish I had installed it when the truck was new. Really nice in the mountains, too.
