Jacobs Vacum Pump Failure

On Friday I heard a very unusual noise coming out from under my dash. It sounded like a speedo cable that needed lube. I am sure my truck only has 0's and 1's feeding the speedo it's info, so I looked further. I noticed my Exhaust Brake would not work. Upon further inspection I found the noise to be comming from the Jacobs vacum pump. I have checked the rest of the system with a hand vacum pump and everthing seems to be holding vacum. I now have a pump on order. It is not a normal depot stock item and will take several days to come in. I think this pump should have lsted more than 66K.

1 yr. or 100K mi. The brg. went out on mine at about 170K. Had to buy a new pump, 440 smackers from dlr.

From what I can figure out on the Jacobs site the brake itself is 3 years 100,000 miles. The vacum componets are all 3/36. I am way beyond my mileage. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I think it great that found this thread. My vacuum pump went out on me about 10 days ago. I have been dealing with Jacobs and Cummins on the issue. My local Jacobs rep. has told me this is the first failure he has heard of. I am starting to think he is not being honest. I have 17 months and less then 20k on my pump. I bought mine through the dealer as a Mopar accessory. It has a 12 month/ 12k warrenty, so they will not touch it. Right now the Jacobs rep is trying to get me a new pump, so I am giving them a chance before I display my displeasure with their pump design. Apparently, they have a bigger problem then they are admitting to. BTW, from the dealer the pump would cost me $588 and Cummins price was $1100. I couldn't believe it, since the whole brake set up was $1088. If Jacobs doesn't get me a new pump I am just going to source out a DC vacuum pump from Pac or BD to tie into my system (Jacobs pump spec is 16-29 lbs - Hg). I refuse to pay $600 every year in a half for a $2 diaphram in a non servicable pump.



If you are on the east coast I can get you the Jacobs rep #, even if you are not maybe you would want to call them to just to make them aware this is not an isolated issue. Lets get these guys to pay us a little attention .

I noticed that the exhaust brake had failed, and as it happens, I had bought the extended warrenty. Good thing because I was over 36K miles. The vacuum pump had failed, and the Engine Computer had a bad output on the pin that controls the vacuum switch to the exhaust brake. New vacuum pump and Engine Computer installed. The fan clutch was bad as well. So a new fan was installed. I paid for the new belt and $100. 00.

That about covers the cost of the extended warrenty... #ad

I emailed Jacobs on Tuesday with some general questions about the vacum pump. As of Sat. they had not replied back to me. I am very disapointed in thier service. After two Jacobs brakes, I will be very slow to purchase a third one. I thought that Jacobs would provide better service. On Monday I will call them and see what they have to say. If they are not going to answer thier email, they should not put the option on thier web site.

I called the Jacobs rep last Monday to see if any progress was made and I was told I should be getting a call from the Cummins rep. I had to put a second call into him on Thursday because I had not heard from the Cummins rep. He said he would caontact the Cummins rep for me again, but i still have not got a phone call. I really hope the process starts to move forward because it is no fun trying to stop a 14k trailer with out the exhaust brake. I'll keep eveyone updated.

The warranty states that it is 3/36 on all except the brake itself. That warranty is 36/100. Here is a link to the site. This should be with the paperwork that came with your brake. You should be covered.

Thanks for the link. According tot he paper work it needs to be inpected by a Cummins or Mopar rep. I think this is why my problem has been pushed back to Cummins. Hopefully next week I will have this resolved.

Well, it looks like Jacobs has decided to warrenty my vacuum pump under their 3/36 coverage. The only problem now is that I have to make the claim through MOPAR and since they only list a 1/12 warrenty they don't want to get stuck with the bill. I am hoping the retards at my local dealerships parts department can figure this out because I really miss my engine braking.
