Jaguars, any good???

A female friend of mine is thinking of buying a used one, it has about 5,000 miles on it. She is buying it from a good friend. It is a 2001, unknown model. She said she looked the Blue book value, and it listed at $34,000 right now, and wholesales for $29,000. They were going to sell it to her for $29,000.

Anyone have experiences with these newer Jags? Do they still have problems like the old ones? Do they hold their resale value?

My mom has a 99' XJ8-L and engine and transmission wise, its been great, however, the electrical stuff is not great, Taillights were not working for awhile, 3 radios, headlight switch went bad and power window issues. I beat the HELL out of the car and it runs fine though.

From my experiences, a couple of decades ago, Jaguars are fun to drive but costly to repair and hard to work on. And I'm not comfortable using a shifter that's shorter than my. . forearm.

I hear they are much better now that Ford took over. Still they are a high maintance car.

Maintenance is $$$ as are parts. I try and do the work myself if it does'nt involve being an electrical engineer. The stupid thing has SIX fuse boxes.

The only problem would be the maintenance - which I understand is real high. Mother-in-law has an older MBZ - fuel filters are $200 each and there are 2 of them. A lexus would be a better choice. .

I agree, my wife has a Lexus LX470 and reliability and dealer service cannot be beat. When she complained that the tires were wearing out too fast at the 15K service, they gave her a 2002 RX300 for a loaner. Kept the car for a week while waiting for approval from manufacturer to replace the tires under warranty. Approval was granted and the 15K service, new tires, wheel alignment, wash and vaccum and a full tank of gas was free because they "took so long" to get her car back to her. This was despite the fact that she had a 2002 Lexus to use as a free loaner. This is the 2nd Lexus she has owned and this kind of service is what makes her not even consider any other brand. Check the JD Power reports... Lexus is consistently at the top of the list.

It is always best to buy Jaguars in pairs so you will have one to drive while the other is in the shop... ... ... ... ... ... ...

The new Jag S-type is the SAME car as the Lincoln LS... both are crap. The New-for-2002 little Jaguar 4-door (cant recall what they call it) is an AWD Ford Contour (Mondeo to the rest of the world). I would advise your friend to continue to admire Jaguars from a distance. As for Toyota et al... . no thanks. Buy something European for crash-worthiness. It depends on what she would like a car to do for her: go fast, or quiet, or smooth or a sedan/coupe... . then go look at VW, BMW and lastly, MB. MB is making a pretty cool hot-rod: the new C-class AMG. supercharged V6 @ 350hp, and about $53k. Cheaper than a Vette or Porsche and will stomp either one!

Ill say one thing for Jaguars, i was stuck in Bumper to Bumper traffic in my moms XJ8 and the car behind me got rear ended and shoved into me and in turn, i was shoved into the car in front of me. Very little damge to the jag, the Cirrus behind me was totalled, antifreeze everywhere, the whole grill was pushed in too. I managed to still chase the guy who ran at over a 100mph and that was 2 months ago, car still runs great. A few wire ties and duct tape and the car looks pretty good still.
