January 26, 2005 UPDATE

The Jacobs Exhaust Brake for 2004. 5 and 2005 model years is NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE at Dodge Ram dealers. See your local Dodge dealer and order Mopar part number 82208835AB, or see the nearest Cummins Distributor and order Cummins part number 4089924 The 2003 and 2004 model year Jacobs Exhaust brakes are available from Cummins Distributors only, under the part number 4089427.

I had one on order since late December. Dealer said they technically couldn't order them until Jan 14, if I remember correctly. Anyway, he ordered it when he was able to and it came in first part of last week, and they installed it last Friday (1/21). It works great! I cranked it this morning when it was 16 degrees, let it idle with the exhaust brake on for a couple minutes, drove 8 miles to the Post Office, and it was warm enough then that the brake didn't come on when I let it idle there. But I left it running and by the time I got back to the truck, it had cooled down enough that the exhaust brake had cut back on by itself, to keep the engine warm. Cool! Oh yeah - it slows the truck down, too. ;)

I've been torn between the pacbrake and jacobs brake for a while now. Actually one of the main things pushing me towards the jake brake is the shifter mounted switch. I like it a lot better than the pacbrake switch. I wonder if I could use a jake switch on a pac setup. I may also wait until the pac pxrb becomes available for the ram.

I had a BD on my '93, which you could get with both a toggle switch and a shifter-mounted one. I really like the shifter-mounted switch a lot better, too. If the other exhaust brakes interface with the ECM, I expect it just boils down to preference. But, having seen how much better an exhaust brake works when it's computer controlled, I certainly wouldn't want to go back to a manual one.

Hi JohnnyH, I have used both the Jacobs and Pac shifter switch. I prefer the rocker type that Pac uses vs. the up down switch on the Jacobs. Your index finger simply rocks it back and forth. My Jacobs switch buzzed from the moment it was installed. I had a rubber band around it and the shift lever to stop the buzzing and sometimes that did not stop it. Very annoying. The dealership ordered one for warranty replacement and it never did arrive (10 months). Jacobs may well use a different switch now. I'm not aware. Astheticaly, neither one is anything to write home about. There is a member on this board that makes a switch recessed into the top of the shift knob. The wire runs right inside the shift lever. I think you have to drill a hole at the bottom of the lever for the wire to exit but it makes a nice clean install. The knob resembles the OE knob.

What are the best prices people are getting for the jake brake? I will install myself. The dealer wants $1325. There must be a better price. Thanks
