That is VERY cool! It's amazing that it can make an operational piece of equipment with no assembly. All the parts are made together and they work.

That is OUTRAGEOUS. I just finished reading an excellent sci/fi thriller called Daemon, by Daniel Suarez It reaches into the near past as well as the approaching future to paint a VERY compelling and chilling story of what might be about to happen with our modern world. One of the subjects he broached was about AI programmed computers placing orders for on-demand parts to create advanced weaponry. The machines he talked about operated JUST LIKE THIS ONE!!!! Much of the story is based on real technology that now exists, but I had NO idea that this type of production technology is here, now. I mean, the scanner costs less then $3000, and can 3d cad ANY part which can then be fed to the 3D "plastic printer"... really amazing. The book, by the way, is an AWESOME read... while different subject and genre, I rank it just about up there with McMurtry's Lonesome Dove!!!Oo.

Stereo lithography as shown is an interesting technology, but it doesn't produce useful parts - only models from a relatively fragile plastic material. If you want to make useful metal parts, you've still got to go to a machine shop or foundry.

However, the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), is basically the same as traditional plastic stereo lithography, but it prints metal parts!
