"..... I just got my first 93 D350 (119,000 miles) this week and I've got lots of questions. It seems there could be auto trans. problems... When first taking off forward or reverse you have to just about floor board it to get moving at all. Once the truck is moving (unless you use the brakes to stop ) things seem to be pretty good. Sometimes when getting up to speed, it sounds and feels like the transmission is shifting up and down. transmission fluid looks and smells good. (What is correct fluid ? ) Does anybody have any ideas ? Another question is how do you test the crank position sensor that takes it readings from the damper pulley. the sensor looks as if someone may have replaced it and laeft the spacers out. I found one spacer and made a second and set the sensor at . 050" gap. The charging system is not working either. Everything else seems in order. ANy help or suggestions are welcome... . "

Transmission - need to idle the trans in neutral for several minutes before you try to drive. In park the early trans don't circulate fluid so if you try to go from park and temps are low it doesn't want to move. Try locking OD out and see if it still feels like it is hunting gears. The TPS, speed sensor, bad connections, can cause weird things to happen to OD shift. If you are town driving sometimes it is hard to tell what is going on.





Mot sure about checking crank sensor, I think typical trouble shooting is to replace. Might want to backtrack the harness and look for frayed or broken wires and clean and grease all connections. Check alternator also as the brushes can go bad. The PCM is the final control for the charging system so if it doesn't see a good signal from crank sensor it won't charge. Does AC work?

problems with 93

Slow response on initial pull off in the morning is no big deal. Before you move away, shift the transmission from D to R and back a couple of times and when it feel like it is 'hooked up' you can pull off as normal. Floor boarding it is NOT the way to get the oil through the system.



The charging system and hunting overdrive is going to be in the PCM. Hunting by itself is one thing but when the charging goes, it is more likely the PCM. The PCM will also give faulty action with the air conditioner and cruise control.

Cold transmission- I put Mom's in neutral and rev it about 1/3 pedal for 5-10 seconds, take my foot off, then put it in D or R, and it seems to do just fine. PUtting the pedal to the floor will not help, as James said. I have read there is a switch comewhere that prevents it from going into OD when it's cold, but apparently that switch doesnt work on Mom's- it will go into OD at 0 deg right out of the driveway as soon as you hit 35mph. I'd still get the fluid and filter changed, just as a preventative, so you know where you are in terms of servicing. You can adjust the TPS- there is a blade on top of the pump brakcet that can be turned. You can use a 10mm wrench to turn it without removing anything. SOmetimes, they will also get dust in them. You can take them apart and clean them out, put in a good dose of electrical grease, and be good for another 5-100Kmi.



Charging- Does it not charge at all? Or does the needle on the gauge move all over the place, with no rhyme or reason? If the former, I'd say check your connections, clean the corrosion off the terminals on the battery, etc. If it is the latter, you are looking at a new PCM, or bypassing the PCM and installing a manual volt regulator. (Wish I had paid more attention to the 93 that I had it done on- I could be rich by now) You will have a "check engine" light on constantly, but that can be fixed easily enough- remove the bulb.
