Was just going to WalMart...

Winderz XP SP2

Was the jeep 4. 0L designed to be a diesel... . these things are bombproof and a buddy told me it was supposed to be a diesel at first... is it true?

The Jeep 4. 0L is a worked AMC 258 CI AMC engine that has been around since the 60's or early 70's, maybe longer. They also made a 232 CI version of it also. AMC also made a 307 (?), 360, and 401 (?) V8, and I was told once that all their engines shared the same bell housing, making engine conversions pretty easy.

I have owned a 1973 AMC Gemlin with the 232, a 1974 Gremlin with the 258, a 1976 Cherokee with a 258, a 1978 Jeep J10 PU with a 360, and a 1987 Jeep Cherokee with the 4. 0L.

We got an old 92 Cherokee beater car with the 4. 0.

It fools a lot of people. :-laf

Wife has been getting between 15-18MPG's with it.

Me driving..... 11. 5? :-laf

I work at the plant where the 4. 0L is built. As far as I know, it was never designed to be a diesel. Klenger summed it up pretty good. This engine is currently being used in the Jeep Wrangler only, and is slated to be killed sometime in early '06.

AMC built several V-8's. 290, 343, and 390. Then the 'jeep' V-8's... 304 jeep engine was a stroked 290, 360 was a stroked 343, and the 401 was a stroked 390.

All AMC I-6's and V-8's share engine boltpatterns and are interchangeable pretty much only neededing minor engine mount modifications to switch between them. Only the 4 bngrs ... pontiac iron duke. . and the AMC 2. 5L had different bolt patterns and could not be swapped without making major changes.

AMC also had a 327 V-8... NOT a GM engine... but built by Nash and purchased by Kaiser from AMC in the 60's. It was used in Gladiator trucks and the wagoneers of the era.

It will be sad once the 4. 0L is gone. Although anitquated... in my opinion it's one of the best engines EVER made.
