Jeep Cherokee problems

My brother in law has an '87 Cherokee that the front end isn't engaging. The transfer case engages and the front u joints turn and the axle locks in. Does anyone know how the axle engages? Or if it is a full time axle or if it has hubs? Thanks for any help.

They do not have locking hubs. I think they used a system similar to the late 2nd gens Dodge's ('cept 2002) with a vacuum solenoid.

It sounds like a vacuum problem. The link I'm providing will fix the problem for about $20. On my Jeep I solved the problem a different way. When I depended on vacuum my 4wd would take at least 5min to engage.
