My son just bought the 2005 Liberty with the 2. 8 diesel. All in all, we're all very impressed with the engine responce and vehicle quality. The diesel is very quiet,,,,,something like a low growl.



I've been useing AMSOIL in my truck since it was new. I'm going to check with the dealer to see if AMSOIL will be acceptable regarding keeping the warranty in effect. If so, does any one know if I can use the same weight oil we use in our cummins diesels????

Don't most vehicle warranties specify using an oil that is API certified? 99% of AMSOIL's offerings are not API certified.



The reason? It's really expensive to have the API certify your oil... and you have to do it every time you change your formula. AMSOIL decided to avoid all of those expenses for the vast majority of their products.



I belive one of the only exceptions is the 15W-40 synthetic blend that is sold to municipalities that require an API certified engine oil.

Was at the dealer today and they looked up the specs. They use Mobil 1. The weight is 0-40. They state that if you can't locate the 0-40, use 5-40. I never even heard of 0-40! Supposedly they use 15-40 in Europe. I'll mention that and see what they have to say.



After we left the dealership, my son tells me that he was told the oil change intervals are 12,000 miles. That "definitely",,, doesn't sound right. I said regardless of what they're saying, I wouldn't let my oil changes go over 6,000 with a synthetic.
 
12,000 sounds plausible to me, only because the owners at TDIclub advocate 10,000 mile intervals in the VW's. I agree... too long for my comfort.
 
Use the 5W-40 European oil that Amsoil offers for the Liberty. You can probably go the 10-12,000 miles, but you need to change the filter at the 4-5,000 mile mark if you use a regular filter. Amsoil doesn't have a filter for the Liberty application yet, but you might be able to call the tech line and get a cross reference for a Donald Endurance filter. Once you find a long lasting filter then you can run the 10,000 miles before changing the filter.



A dealership can't void a vehicles warranty if the oil isn't API Certified. As long as the oil meets the minimum requirements that the API has listed for either the gas or diesel application then it's o. k. to use in your vehicle.

In the interest of avoiding an "oil war", I decline to comment or further acknowledge any brand specific oil related topics.



As for the Liberty CRD and the extended drain intervals... I sincerely hope it doesn't come down to warranty claims. In the meantime, go over your warranty with a fine tooth comb accompanied by a legal professional. :)
