External wastegate vs "ported" dual wastegate ports?

Yep - you do need to remove the Cab for FORD

Took the plunge and bought a 05 liberty for wife. Clean, 26,000 runs good.

After looking it over it needs some modification imho. The fuel pump and filter for one ( fass, airdog ect). Exhaust for another (remove cat, free flowing system). Gauges of course.

My preliminary research says they have a high rate of failure on the egr valve that is caused by the ecm. Some poeple have disabled the egr valve and claimed good results.

I know that I need more info, does anyone know of a forum for these jeeps.

My other problem is that they were never sold in california so even though it is under warranty it does me no good.

So, of course I am my own warranty station.

Any ideas, comments, flames or bad jokes are welcome.

Congrats on your purchase. As for the EGR valve my CEL came on for that reason just a couple of months after i purchased mine. I took it to the dealer and they replaced it under warranty. It has ran fine for over 2 years since then. Over 31,000 miles and still gets 23 to 25 mpg. Hope you have fun driving yours as I do mine.

Here is the best forum I've found:

L. O. S. T KJs Offical Web Site - For Jeep Liberty KJ Owners

The emissions systems are the main problem with this engine. The CCV is crap. Put in a Provent or do and open vent. The open vent is called the Elephant hose mod, EHM. I'll keep your intercooler from filling with oil. 5minutes and $5.

The EGR and supporting structures are also problematic. The easy solution is to unplug the MAF sensor which shutting down the EGR system but you get a CEL. There is a guy on the LOST forum that has figured out a solution that keeps the CEL off and others are trying to come up with plug and play box. I did the EHM and ORM (off road mod - unplug the MAF) on the wife's libby and all is good. Runs much better. Only problem we have had is the FVC (part of the EGR system) has got stuck closed at shut down and prevents starting. It gets gummed up from all the EGR related goo in the intake. I unplugged it to prevent the sticking closed but I had to put it back (as well as the other stuff) for the lower ball joint recall. After 2 starts, it stuck closed again. It is getting fixed by the dealer this week under warrenty and then it gets unplugged again when we get it home.

The fuel pump is a mechanical pump in the CP3. (There are a few differences in our CP3s and the Libby's and this is one of them). There is no electric pusher pump. It is a negative pressure system. The filter isn't too good. 10 micron. There a adapter for the stock housing that allows the use of a 2 micron CAT filter. The filter housing is prone to leaks and cracks. The are some folks trying to put a Racor filter head on but there is a sensor in the stock filter housing that is a hold up now. I don't think a FASS type system is necessary and some say would be harmful.

The exhaust is OK expect for the muffler. An Aeroturbine 2525 will do the trick.

Gauges would be nice. Maybe later.

The transmission is also not what it ought to be, but big suprise. What US manufactorer has ever put a good auto behind a diesel. Suncoast has stepped up to the plate for a good fix when the time comes.

We really little this little Italian tractor. It is so much fun to drive. I'm looking forward to my wife getting ready to get a now vehicle so I can drive this thing around town. But my wife likes it so much, I may never get it.

Tinman summed it up.

I've unplugged the EGR on mine and it made a big diff in the fuel mileage and such. I've got the added ARB bumper on mine also as I live in the sticks and 1 deer/tree encounter pretty much ended the orginal.

It's a great lil rig and after my warranty is up I will prolly put in a suncoast converter.

Yea, what Tinman said.

I unplugged my mas air sensor and did the crank case ventilation mod. I bought mine with 29,000ish miles on it. It is also an '05. I love it. The factory torque converter recall/replacement was done for me before taking delivery of it. I get 26 mpg and it will pull a trailer well. My girlfriend loves the thing as much as I do and it is hard to keep her out of it!!

Only thing I would change is to have a 6-speed manual trans like the gassers can be had with.
