Cummins C500????

Cummins MPG vs. Dodge Caravan MPG: Gotta love diesels!

Ran into a 85? Jeep with a Renault Turbo Diesel.

Never heard of them before.

Guy says he got 30-35 to the gallon.

Kind of neat. Be neater with a 4cyl Cummins.

I had a 63 Renault Caravelle in high school, long before they called them Reneau! It was a tough engine(51c. i. wet sleeve 4 cyl) but the body rusted away around it real fast. Didn't know they had a TD! Maybe on the foreign market - home to them. I bet they're expensive to fix - like their gassers! Craig

I believe our Canadian friends have the option of turbo diesels in some of their Jeeps, and in Toyotas, too. When you search on "+diesel +(insert your favorite vehicle here)" its not uncommon to find that outside of the USA, you can get diesel options in LOTS of vehicles - Toyota FourRunners, Jeeps, LandCruisers, to name a few. We should be so lucky. :(

Stay very very far away from that Jeep Gene-if you look in the dictionary under POS you'll find a pic of one of those! ;) Never owned one... . but heard lots about them when I frequented the various XJ forums. Gutless, most of them didn't last that long, and expensive to buy parts for. Heard tell once that the only reason for their existence was to use up engines that were built for a military contract which was cancelled before delivery... The concept was good-the execution was poor... . what else is new? :D

Now a newer Euro-spec Grand Cherokee with the 5 cyl VM Motori (Italian arm of Detroit Diesel) would be just what the doctor ordered!

I took our wrangler up to carlisle this year for ACN, ended up parked next to a diesel cherokee on the fun field! It was pretty nice and the guy said he had another one, said they were fairly reliable!

I remember seeing an ad several years ago for diesel powered jeeps. The ad stated that they were built for export only and that this particular batch of them, I don't remember how many, were part of a cancelled order.

The ad went on to state that they were not legal for sale in this country as they were not built to satisfy our standards as required by law. They would only be sold to a buyer that would certify that they would not be resold for use here.

Of course it is possible that some of them did end up staying in the USA.

dusting out cobwebs

If I remember correctly the were for sale during the 80's for mileage reasons and the courtship Chrysler had with them to supply engines for various vehicles. I do remember seeing the sales brochures for them. I think it was renault that supplied the powertrains for som of the Eagle line also.
