does any one know if i can run jet-a fuel in a CTD? i heard it was a refined diesel fuel. i have about 40 gallons of it fresh out of a plane at work. not sure if it useable or not. ant help would be great thanks.

Is Jet-a fuel like JP-4? When I was stationed at Fort Carson, we ran JP-4 in our HMMWV's, instead of diesel and they ran fine.

It was OK in the 12 valves but I'm not sure if I would use it in the common rail. My guess is it would work. Might be better to mix a few gallons in each tank and not use it straight. Even at that I would add some lubricity additive. Just my opinion.

I always thought that the main difference in jet and diesel was that jet had less "oil" since a jet engine doesn't need it for lubrication.

I work at the airport and was offered some Jet A that was pumped out of test engines (can't be re-used for certification). The lubricity is much lower than pump diesel. I wouldn't use it unless you put some kind of lubricating additive in it.

Last time I looked, Jet-A was running about 2. 25 a gallon. 100ll was over $4 a gallon.

mix it 1/3 JP and 2/3 #2 and you will be fine. i run JP-5 out of the Helo's in mine at 33/66 mix all the time. its free, as much as i want.

When I was a UH-1H crewchief, JP-5 was our emergency fuel. We ran JP-8 and JP-4 (when we found it).

There was a formula one time for mixing oil with jet fuels to make them similar to #2.

To give you an idea... jet fuel is closer to kerosene than diesel fuel.

I remember an older crewchief telling me that running K-1 in a Huey was like putting 130 octane in a car.

If it leaves the ground we will all be using it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oo.

Jet A will burn fine in the twelve valves (I've put 30,000 miles on my 12 valve running mostly straight Jet-A). The VP-44 pump needs more lubricity and I would not try it even mixed, the Common Rail is less dependent on lubricity and I'd think a 50/50 ratio would not push things at all.

My experience: Jet-A has less BTU/gallon than #2 diesel and your mileage will drop one or two MPG. Other than that, my EGTs, boost, and power output seemed unaffected. My source is the waste fuel sumped from planes and trucks where I work and is quite dirty, requiring a little work to get it clean and dry. But worth it in the long run.

Fredric, Huey's and Cobras are now using J-p 5 and Jp-8 only. Jp-4 is used if it is around. 5 is now more refined than 4 and is lighterweight by a couple ounces. 8 is even lighter weight so is mostly deser use. just an update on the times. we have to log every time we use 8 and can not de-fuel the birds here at pendleton if they have had 8 in them due to the flashpoint being too low for the company here on base to take the fuel back.

At a seminar at May Madness, the local Bosch Rep. told us that all the diesel powered vehicles at the Las Vegas Airport were using jet fuel with the addition of Stanadyne Lubricity Formula.
