Thanks for the link - looks simple enough.

I just hope that my '98 NB is at least a little similar to the A4 Jetta/Golf. :)

As for the low mileage... . I wonder if your MAF is dirty/bad..... and your intake manifold/EGR valve could be clogged up with crud.

Matt

E. Kahn, you may be using poor quality fuel, or just have a really heavy foot. I'm assuming you have a 5 speed... Those numbers would be good for an auto. YOu may have a clogged intake. Simply take off the tube from the intercooler to EGR and use a flashlight to take a look in there. If the egr is all gunked, rest assured the intake is worse. The intake side of the egr is always worse than the intercooler side. Have someone with a vag-com perform the EGR mod on your car, or you'll be paying dearly when it comes time to clean the intake. Expect 6 hours of labor or $500-600. If nobody has a vag-com near you(which i doubt) buy it for 140 and use a laptop to do it yourself.

HoleshotHolset - the ventectomy is the same for the NB, except you may need to remove the tail light to fully get at it. Don't forget to put the white piece back in!

I had the EGR mod done at a local get together, it has gotten the same milage since it was new, I just wonder if the pump timing was just slightly worse on mine from the factory

no chip because I can not afford a new clutch and from what I have read on freds, it is just a mtter of time on a 2002 before the clutch starts slipping after being chiped

]

and yes , I probably use crappy fuel, just get what ever is cheapest and have no interest in bio-diesel untill the price matches the petro variety

Well, those few differences - fuel, a/c on , lots of city driving etc, no additives, explain the few mpgs lower you are getting Eric, is my guess. By the way, the Wett chip does not fry clutches, I've had it for 55k on my '02 and it's never slipped once. The upsolute chip makes too much torque for the stock clutch and roasts it. The stock sachs clutch limit is 198lbs. Upsolute makes like 220lbs, wet makes 195. Hp differnce is only 2, Wett 118hp, Ups 120hp. I think two less hp and a smoother powerband is worth saving your clutch. Also with the Wett you can pop it out and put the stock chip back in, in a matter of minutes.

Does the Wett chip increase the 'boost limit'?

I know that the Up chip/reflash increases the 'boost limit' by a few psi... . which probably accounts for the increase in torque.

I need a little more ECM friendly boost to burn the extra fuel I'm feeding it.

Any ideas on which chip adds more timing (if any).....

(I need a lot more timing..... )

It would be neat to see a Wett chip /Upsolute chip/VanAaken box/other box comparision... . not even in terms of HP... but EXACTLY what each is doing for fueling, timing, boost, etc.

Matt

I dont believe any change the timing. Both chips increase fueling and boost, and tuning boxes just add fuel. Tuning boxes are known to be finicky on tdi's, and dont give as much performance. The difference in the wett and up chips are the fuel maps, and boost increases. The wett is much more conservative with the boost, in the interest of your car's longevity. The fueling maps are also different. The wett chip drives as smoothly as stock all the way around, with a lot more power. One of the best mods I've ever done to any of my cars. The only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. If you just want to do a mod to increase your daily driver's power a good bit, do the wett chip. With either chip, as long as you dont nail it below 2k rpm, you're fine. Wett is just a little safer and smoother.

I like the idea of the Wett chip..... I can take it out and replace it with the stocker with ease.

With Upsolute... . I have to take it to a dealer and have them reflash my ECM... . putting it back to stock is the same proceedure.

Since I have the "KermaTDI" Bosio Power Plus 502 injectors... . I need a lot more timing and some more boost to burn all that fuel.

And if a chip increases EGT's too much..... I can take out the Wett with ease and sell it if need be.

Thanks for the info!

Matt

Matt, wett has a new chip that's just come out or is coming out this week, specifically designed for TDI's with larger injectors  Be sure to specify that one. Also they have two versions, 1 and 2. Two has slightly higher boost than 1, I believe 1. 2 bar. Version one might have . 9 bar. Version 1 will not have boost spikes past 18 or 19psi(safe limit), and 2 will have spikes up to 22-23psi, which will require a boostgauge, and a boost valve or dawes device to control. I believe the chip is designed with pp520 or ". 205" injectors though. The pp502 is even bigger, like a '. 216'... Since you have more fueling, I'd go with the higher boost chip, and a boost valve. Injection timing can be set with the vag-com software or by mechanical pump adjustment. Good luck with your setup!

Interesting..... :D

I still have it on good authority that there is no 'chip socket' on my ECM..... I have to reflash it no matter what... . and it isn't a plug and play and vice-versa affair.

I'll have to check out a website or two for more info on the Wett chip... . sounds like just the ticket for my setup.

Man - I need a bigger turbo... . a VNT-25 would be nice..... or I'll just slap on that Holset HY-35 I have sitting in my bedroom.

I get 29-30psi spikes now anyhow... . it settles down to 15-18psi once the ECM figures out what's going on. EGT's are okay..... I just hope the chip doesn't make it too much hotter. Timing is what I really need..... I think that'll cool my EGT's very nicely.

GREAT INFO!

BTW: I did the ventectomy on the NB yesterday... . it took less than 5 minutes and required NO tools. All I did was remove the right tail-light and it was right there in front of me. I took off the fuel cap and pushed it out by the little valve and it was in my hand in seconds. Gutted out the internals and slapped it back in... . voila!

Matt

Very interesting. I thought I read somewhere that on the NB its was harder to get it out. From what you say theres not much to it. I will have to do this shortly.

Bear in mind that most of the people that own these cars are whiners that have never gotten grit underneath their (freshly painted) fingernails.

I lied in my previous post..... you will need a tool... . or any object that can remove the access panel to the tail-light..... I've used a coin before to get it off. From there on in... . no tools required.

I filled her up this AM..... all the way to the top..... just like using the vent technique but you don't have to hold the vent with the nozzle anymore.
