Performance boxes and TPS, MAP sensor failures??

Don't kill me for doing this..... I'm just curious.

I know the benefits of both and think both methods have produced nice results... . I just want to hear what everyone else thinks.

I performed the jig fix. Maybe someday I will pull the cover off and check things out and tighten the bolts up. Maybe I'll add it to my 200k mile preventative maintence :)



I think the pin sliding out some, allow the botls to loosen a little more. :confused:

If your front seal is suspect and you dont mind "working" on your truck ,tabbing is the way to go. If the seals OK ,I'd jig it. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it. :cool:
 
I had a lot of fun jiggin' it, and in another hundred thousand miles I'll have a lot of fun pullin' the cover off and tightening the bolts.
 
Having done 2 trucks with tab method and finding the bolt next to the pin only had about 5lbs torque on it made me think taking that cover off was good thing to do. Both trucks had the bolt loose, 1 pin hadnt moved the other was out 1/8 inch.
 
Seems to me that if loose bolts were ever going to develop into a problem we would have heard more about it. I'm for the jig's simple insurance for a problem that most likely will never occur for most.
 
Jig

Jig is too easy to even think about the tab fix. I had to have mine apart for other stuff so I tabbed it. Otherwise the jig is faster, easier and works just as good.

Isn't there a cover bolt under the cam gear that you can't get to? That means the tab fix requires pulling the cam to tighten that bolt. Anybody ever hear of a bolt falling out?

I am going to do the KDP fix this weekend. My truck has 108000 on it yet at 96000 the front seals started to leak. I took it to the dealer and they pulled the front down to put new seals in it. I asked them to fix the KDP and as usual they just looked at me weird. They did say that when ever they open a engine up DC told them to pull and locktite the bolts in. So I guess that is taken care of.
 
Tab method leaves one more piece of crap to fall into the gears. It may also fail. :-{} Jig method cannot fail, may leave shavings.



Bottom line? Either method is a lot better than nothing.

I think I'm with illflem on this one. If the seal is leaking do the tab. If not, do the jig. I also think that we would have heard of just as many bolts causing damage if they fell out... We don't, so it may not be happening.

I jigged it and when and if the seal leaks, I'll pull the cover and locktight the bolts.

:D I thought I might get a rise out a ya Joe. :D On the particular Cummins I looked at when it was apart it apeared that if the tab attaching screw loosened the tab method would fail and if it came out the whole shebang going between the gear and case would cause more trouble than the KDP could. I admit, I could be wrong and have never heard of this happening, but I've been nearly killed by things that weren't supposed to happen but could. Kind of like shavings from the drill jig method that could get in but don't. :)

OK, OK, how bout this. illflem mentioned before, take the cover off, replace the seal, put on a new gasket, use the jig while it is open to make sure of no chips. Then if you want you can add the tab and I would recommend safety wiring the tab bolt. I trust safety wire, not Locktite. You would then have redundant KDP fixes that neither could fail. Than we could all relax and read the posts on Amzoil and K&N filters. :D

I agree the KDP problem is still in my truck. That is why I am going to to the jig fix very soon. I just thought it was funny that the dealer looked at me weird when I ask if they would look at the pin when they had the engine open. The only thing they would admit to was the bolts and according to them they had never heard of the KDP problem. (yea right!!)
