Gave a PSD owner a ride

I just purchased a 1966 5020 JD with an M & W Turbo on it. I was doing the service on it such as changing the oil and antifreeze while up home in the OK panhandle. It has an oil filter in the supply side line of the turbo and I was wondering what the replacement filter might be. All it has on the filter is M & W with no numbers or any kind of identification on it. It appears to be about the size of a PH8A which I tried to no avail, the center threads didn't match. The M&W filter appears not to have ever been changed so I was a little nervous using it again.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don

Did you try Napa? I've had good luck with them matching up the odd stuff. I live in a farm area though, they're used to it.

M&W filter

Is M&W still in business? I'm not sure! Seems like they were in Ill. somewhere. I,m not sure what thread the filter may have. I have used hydraulic filters but did not have any thread matching problems. Might ask some farm equip. dealer about M&W! jps

I think it's M&W Gear Company. They made all kinds of aftermarket parts for tractors. My Farmall Super M has an M&W clutch (allows you to stop the tractor while baling, without stopping the PTO), an M&W live hydraulic pump, and an M&W throttle lever. It's aftermarket fast hitch may be from them too.

Try your local John Deere dealer, mine carries the filters. A 5020 turbo it should move a lot of dirt,I have a 3020 with m&w the filter is around five bucks I think. Tim

I finally tracked down a web site for M & W Gear Co.

It is located at www.mw-gear.com

They are now part of the Alamo Group, Inc. and build mostly hay equipment. Phone number for parts is 800-446-5158.

Off the subject, but........

A friend of mine just did a weight reduction on a John Deere 6030 that I believe has the same engine as a 5020. This tractor is competing in the Hot Farm 11,000 and 12,000lb sled pulling class. He is doing fairly well in local pulls using a large turbo, larger injector tips, and beefed up clutch. The Nippo... . pump has not been to a shop but has had the fuel screw turned up a bunch. My question is how to further boost the power? What turbo would you use and is the stock pump capable of major power or convert it to a Bosch P pump? Any leads or advice appreciated, Larry Crawford

Hey Larry

Sorry, but I am not familiar with setting up the 6030 for pullin' but I'm sure someone with our group (TDR) can help out.

I did finally track down the info on the filter for the M&W turbo for the 5020. I called Herschel Adams at 800 247-2167 and he supplied a number to cross reference. I called the NAPA dealer and he came up with a Luberfiner filter #LFP 3413.

Thanks

Don

We've had several 5020's and their predicesor the 5010. the 5020 had a 531 cu inch engine at 141 pto hp, the 5010 had the same motor at 121 hp, the 6030 has the same motor with a bosch in line pump instead of a Roosamaster and is intercool5ed and turbo'd at 175 pto. Real tough beasts, real heavy built. only problem we ever had with them is the planetary bearings need to be replaced about 3000 hrs or when they go they punch a gear out the housing. Real Cheap horsepower. We turbo'd one of the 5020's and kept it for a toy with a 12 foot dozer blade on the front after we went to 4x4's but since we sold it 10 years ago I can't remember the part # for the filter.
