Just found that my vp44 is toast. I started getting the dead pedal on hot afternoons, so i checked my lift pump pressure and sure enough it was less than 5 and would drop to zero. I went ahead and installed a FASS to remedy this as I was on my second factory pump anyway. The dealer said that was a good idea but I did it too late to save my pump. Interesting that the dealer keeps plenty of these on hand.

Where is Liberty Hill? Up here in DFW it is nice and warm. Mine was doing the same thing, afternoon drive - air temp in the 100*-102* area - dead pedal would hit and hold. Showed all codes. Good luck.

Ditto here ... Driving home this evening and something just didn't feel right. Sure enough checked for codes when I got home ... 0216!!

I'm just wondering if it would futile to take it to the dealer or wait till it gets worse. I don't want to take it in and have them tell me everything is fine that'll be $80.

RE: VP44 Failures

Yes it's true low trans. pressure will cause your VP44 to fail we work on them and have seen this SOOO many times. Doesn't make it less painful I know but with a Fass and a PREMIUM rebuilt VP44 you should make it for a long time. By the way call us maybe we can make things easier. Thanks 1-800-955-0476

Brady, what does transmission pressure have to do with the vp44 failure?

This is the first I have ever heard of it.

Thanks

tran. pressure = transfer fuel pressue. that took me a minute too.

sleepy. if you got dead pedal, would THINK you probably got a code too.

even if it doesn't light the chk engine light. My dealership told me the only

justification they needed was a 0216 code, good enough. Think it varies

wildly from one dealer to the next. Mine is crapped out electrically,

I'm pretty sure my rad. fins being half stopped up with crud from the

crankcase vent contributed a lot to this, even though it only ever ran

"warm" 200-210* It seems the circuit board is on the verge of toasting

even when things are all perfect.

mine went belly up a few weeks ago as well, got 87000 miles out of it. its been bombed since around 20,000 too :) when they put the new pump in i had them throw a set of DD2's in as well and holy cow my truck has never ever run this good. i didnt hook up the pump wire this time either i just set it on 1x3 and man its fast. the thing thats gets me is when i just had the 275's and the comp hooked up the power seemed to be in the first half of the pedal but now the farther you push that pedal down the faster it goes... ... man I gave it ¾ pedal in fourth the other night and it went so fast it actually shocked me…. . god help my clutch :)

Well I spoke too soon aparently. The pump got changed and I still have the problem. Now we are stumped. I have 88k on mine but am 2 months out of warranty time wise (ouch). The only trend I have found working this problem is that the hotter it got the worse it got. The only code I have seen is 0602. And by the way Liberty hill is just NW of Austin.

i used to get dead pedal either from a bad map sensor or the comp connectors buildin up moisture, it would happen almost everyday in just about the same spot on the way home (in the heat of the day) after i replaced the map sensor and cleaned the connectors it seemed to be fine for months until it started hard starting and then the pump croaked. Austin huh? me and a buddy at work were just discussing a trip up there for the "austin city limits" concert next month. i like it up there :)

Re: Vp44

Sorry that abbreviation means transfer pressure. I should have used another term. We are finally caught up with our VP44 orders and have pumps on the shelf. So if you need one we can ship. Thanks 1-800-955-0476

Just had to replace my VP44. My truck just died, no codes, no symptoms. Cummins dealer said the lift pump was still putting out 15psi.

WTF. 70k miles

The dealer told me the new lift pumps have a bypass built into them so if they fail it is not as hard on the VP since it doesnt have to pull through a dead pump. Anyone else here this?

Thats what mine did, shut off on the highway and had no codes other than 1693 which cummins and dodge said was normal

Just wanted to post an update on my situation. I took so long because I did not believe the cure. After changing the VP44 and not fixing the problem the dealer wanted to try a filter on the apps signal to the PCM. Lo and behold it cured it! I have driven it enough miles and through enough heat that I am confident it is truly fixed. Also I have been fighting the converter locking and unlocking at light throttle settings for some time and that is gone as well. I don't know what filter they put on it but it is not the DTT unit.
