5th wheel hitch question ??

I’ve just installed a Jordan Ultima 2000 and when I step on the brake or use the manual button, with no trailer attached, the meter reads 00. 3, indicating something is drawing current. Is there a relay or something connected between the brake wire and ground? I haven’t had an opportunity to check this wire for resistance to ground but will do that next.

The manual says to remove the line from the controller to the brakes when not using the controller. Cuts down on wear, they say. I did and no voltage reading now.

Darn fine unit it is !!!

RustyJC & sbiel,

Thanks for the response. It's nice to know it's normal. Now I don't have to look for a problem that doesn't exist. There are enough real ones to keep me busy! I don't have a trailer as yet so I don't have a way to actually test it in use. I do plan on disconnecting it when not is use. Still curious as to where the current is going.

How quick and easy is it to unhook the cable? Is it a TV type connector (like used for throttle cable connection to the carb) or do you have to get out a screwdriver or some tool to do it?

No picture but it's a piece of cake to install. It's so easy, girls can do it! The UPS truck delivered it 1 1/2 hours before I was to go camping Friday. I had it done with time to spare. I took the screw out of the upper right corner of the knee saver panel and mounted the control using that screw hole. My 97 has a screw straight back from the brake arm (at the bottom of the knee saver), I used for the cable. I have 1 1/2" of brake arm travel at that point. Be sure to mount the cable housing so it points STRAIGHT at the center of the brake arm bracket hole for the spring gizmo. Craig

This is why I went with the Prodigy

When I installed the Jordan, the placement of the controller required using the entire length of the cable. Consequently, I couldn't get the cable straight enough to completely release. The controller would show a similar reading and the 5er brakes would drag. I ended up tapping the brake pedal each time I had to use the brakes for nearly 200 miles to release the cable. After many adjustments and discussions with Jordan himself I returned the unit. He is truly a wonderful person to do business with and his product is excellent. Good luck!

Blu-meanie, here is a picture of my Jordan installation. When I first installed it I had it mounted so that I needed the entire length of the cable and the cable had too many curves in it. This caused the cable to bind so that as I gradually pressed the brake pedal the reading on the display unit would not change, then all of a sudden it would jump up by 2 amps.

I ended up moving the display unit so that the cable was directly in line with the brake pedal and I made a spacer so that the bottom of the unit is out away from the knee bolster. This allows the cable to sweep in a gentle arc - no more binding, works fantastic!

Of course this puts the display unit almost directly under the steering column where you can't see it while you're driving, but I have found that to not be a problem - once the trailer is hooked up and I have the green continuity light and I press the red button to check the amperage, I never have to look at it again.
