I was car shopping with the g/f this weekend, bought her a new '05 Jetta. California sucks, no TDI's here...

Anyway, as we're driving down Steven's Creek auto row, a sweet white 3rd Gen dually pulls up behind me at a light. I see he has an Attitude monitor mounted on the A-pillar.

As I pull away from the light, I mat the throttle to blow some smoke (140 setting).

He promptly flips me off as I pull away.

I'm not sure where his attitude came from, as he smoked on take-off, too.

As a diesel enthusiast, I smile every time I see a smoke show. I also smile and give a thumbs up when I see any sweet Dodge Cummins, from 1st gen to 3rd gen. I don't understand why this guy saw the need to flip me off. Not that it's a big deal, I just don't get it.

Is there some etiquette that I'm not aware of, or did he just have attitude?

I'm with you JCleary. I get a big grin when I see a smoke show. He must of been having a bad day. You did all you could to try and cheer him up but it just wasn't enough. :-laf :D

A friend of mine was showin off as he was pulling his boat out of the water and was blowin a lot of smoke. That was fine however as he pulled next to me he smoked out my boat. I was cleaning black soot and unburnt fuel out of the upholstry for weeks. That was uncool

"Man" That's alot of smoke Oo.

While I understand the fun for some- the smoke thing does not trip my trigger, don't want to breath it, don't want it on my truck or any toys I'm towing.

So I suppose if I got an unprovoked dose I might not consider it a friendly wave, but more of a person blowing cigar/cigarette smoke in your face.

Not trying to start a contest, but everyone is different and might not admire the show. (and those that know me know I'm pretty laid back). Now for race gas, second best smell in the world:)

I guess, but if you have an Attitude monitor mounted on your A-pillar for everyone to see, reflecting in the sunlight... You're bound to attract some attention.

I dunno, it kind of reminds me of the ricers with the huge tachs. They're asking for it. Same with multi-gauge pillars. Here in the bay area there are so many it's funny. Coffee can exhausts, too.

I'd be annoyed if I was in a lowered car to the right of my CTD with an open window, but definitely wouldn't care if I was in a CTD with the a/c on (It was 105 degrees outsite at the time, according to my overhead)

Talking about smoking out. Last Sunday a bike club "Honda Goldwings and other bikes" cut me off in New Bern, NC... I did what anyone would have done and cut over and the next chance I got passed them. Well I got in front of them and we hit a Red light. I started laughing and my girlfriend was like what? I said watch the stacks. You could barely make out their headlights by the time I was done. Never saw'm again.

HA! Simular story!!! Detroit area on Gratiot ave. . 2 Big bad *** biker dudes roar by me, startled me. I'm like "I I'm louder!!!" Me and my striaght piped diesel pull up one truck infront and to the left. roll into the throttle at 1600rpm on 5/5 and run out 3rd and 4th gear. .

Look in my right mirror and I see nothing but head lights for a moment. Then I get the famous " and a finger" as they turn right down a side street. " Losers.

They didn't expect a diesel to be louder. And it's not my problem if you are on a known cruiseing area driving next to a CTD, or any diesel for the matter.

I some how find trouble. On the way home yesterday There was this few year old F150. Had everything done for appearence. lowered, wide tires, dual exhaust, yada yada yada. as I rolled by at 5mph I tapped the throttle. In my mirror I can see him laughing and pointing at my stock appearing truck (you hear exhaust, and see attitue on the A-pillar, that is all)... ... traffic stops. I'm about 3 cars in front. I roll creeper, grab 2nd and puff a little smoke. He shuts up. instantly. Funny how that works.

Few miles later, kids in a gallant 4 door car. he's got the fart cannon, and some turbo stickers. Same deal with the point and laugh and I was just acclerating from 0-whatever with traffic. As the left lane is a bit faster thent he right, I come up on the car/kid, look over and roll into the throttle at 40ish. Nothing. then I just hammer it build up some smoke and boost and just as my tail is in front I let out and let the wastegate slap open for the so perty sound to echo around. The expression on the face did a 180. Now if this kids "stickers" were lagit "upgrades" he would of done the same with the blow off valve on his "race car" and the race would of been on... . Typicaly... .

Here in MSP, the diesel trucks typicaly get "Them freaking diesels" when we roll into parking lots with all the "race cars" looking for some races.

Jason, how old are you, 16? Let me get this straight, you got mad because they 'startled you' and yet you call them losers when they get mad that you smoked them out? Seems like you sunk down to their level or lower - since they probably were just riding their noisy bikes and didn't care what you were doing or intentionally startle you.

Now I agree that sometimes motorcyclists can be jerks on the road, but you guys that are out there messing with them with your trucks are crazy. Smoking out a group of motorcyclists is like playing roulette with your assets. What happens when one or more of them crash and die? What if they take you to court for intentionally smoking them out, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, etc? We all know how much it costs even if you win in court. . Then there are the basic moral concerns - do you really want to put someone in that much danger because you have the need to feel like a bad *** yourself? I advise you guys to examine your own personal inadequacy issues, and determine the root of your behaviors.

To the original poster - I'm guessing that guy with the juice thought you smoked him out intentionally. I'm with Jcleary though - I love to see a hopped up diesel blow a little smoke, and always give other cummins owners a thumbs up or smile. Typically they look at me like I'm a moron and have no idea why I'm waving - but every once in a while someone else gets excited. I always catch them looking in my wheelwells trying to figure out what those remote reservoirs are :-laf

I love racing the little ricers. I had guy in a lowered Honda Prelude yesterday think he was all that with street tires mounted on the front and nice wheels on the back. Had some gawd awful body kit on it. The whole things primered. Interiors stripped. The whole thing looked like crap and sounded like crap. He's to my right and I can hear him reving the thing up wanting to run. Light's green and I'm on it. I look in my mirror as I'm pulling away and I'm pouring black smoke out my exhaust, into his driver window and completely through his car and out his passenger side window. Needless to say he let off. It was actually funny. But also kinda screwed on my part. Maybe next time he'll pull up on the left of a diesel and keep his windows closed.

baaah! It's no differnet then fog, unexpected fog tho. Yes. I just wasn't expecting harley bikers that night, and it's a cruise strip. Expect to be messed with.

Typicaly, I turn the smoke off for bikes behind me. Unless you're that moron doing 55mph in the left lane on mn-169 north this morning in rush hour traffic, with eveyrone and their mom passing you on the right. I hope he was cleaning soot out of his eye lashes. . . but that's a differnet thread.

I find that a little smoke gets the message in a safer manner then a good old fashion break check. don't you think? If the cops don't regulate drivers to use correct lane usage, some one has to give a clue.
