Jump starting

I have a question for you guys. Does it hurt anything to jump off another vehicle with our 24 volt electrical system. Does it hurt our vehilce to be jumped off. Does it matter which battery you use. I was just wondering in case in the future I need to jump of be jumped off. Thanks guys

Actually it's a 12 volt system, two 12 volt batteries in parallel. Not the best situation as the voltage regulator will cut back as the highest battey becomes charged when the batteries get old. It doesn't make any difference which battery you use and should cause no damage as long as you don't hook up with wrong polarity. There is always the possibility of a battery blowing up from a spark when hookin up jumper cables(last cable hooked up should be good ground source away from battery. ) It is also possible to damage the alternator/voltage regulator by racing the engine on a vehicle that has been jumped off and has a dead battery, should idle for a few minutes until voltage in battery starts to rise.

Just a correction of facts. . Our Rams use a 12 volt system... not 24. We just happen to use 2 batteries... in paralell (I hope im right on this, correct me if Im wrong guys) So the voltage stays the same... but the amperage is doubled.
Do NOT use a 24 volt source to jump a 12 volt system!!!!!! or vice versa!!

As for jumping others... it doesnt hurt the truck... . the usual risks are always there... . (exploding batteries, frying the other guys ECM. . etc. ) You can use either battery... . just so all the hookups are correctly made. I use the lifting eye on the front of the engine as my ground.
As for being jumped... our trucks are actually less prone to all the damage that can be wreaked on the gasser jobs (ECM wise)... #ad

Fellers,for what ever its worth ,the key is hooking cables up correctly of course,but if cables are crossed or touched together causing a spark than you risk blowing a diode in your alternator,to prevent this you must shut your key off,this would be the same as just carring a battery out there and hooking up to it,I personally use this method unless the dead vehicle needs extra charging. #ad

To correctly answer the question.
Yes you can jump start your 12v system off a 24v (big rig) IF you connect to the battery term. And vise versa.
Now befor anyone jumps on here ... the big rig's have a series parral switch which is only engeriged when the start /key/ buttom is in the crank position.
So to start yours connect across the 1 of there 12v battery's and your in bussiness...
To start there's (24 v sys) and a knowen battery set is dead jump across it and the rest of there system will do there part.
Have i ever WITHOUT system damage jump started other vehicles 1000's of times over the past 30yrs, both using veh-veh. 12v jump start gen set kicking out 900 amp's (4 gen's powered by 14hp kolher) and 12v batt's rigged up to supply 24v to--12v systems, and electronic eng's controls BUT as they say don't try this at home kids.
Anyone have any idea of the explosion power of a 12v. maintance free battery??

The 24-12 methoid is not for anyone with out great care and common sence and knowing the state of the veh involved.
Have you ever tryed to jump stone dead 12v or 6 v with the same voltage system and after letting the one charge the other and still won't crank--In this case the only way to start the veh disconnect one cable from the dead battery,it is sucking the amps away from the starter system, & you might be using the jumper cables you bought at the blue lite speical.
You have seen the cable size of the OEM dodge system battery cables --now check out the size of the jumpers in your hand--may work at 70 deg. but that hose your using is not big enough at 0 deg. Read any post talking of the starter staying engaged after letting off the crank pos. Lack of voltage/cranking amps. Get a bigger hose.

We have 2 batteries to put out enough amps to crank that 17. 5 to 1 compression ratio! Big Mutha needs all the help she can get!

NEVER go 24 to 12 volts, you can "tap" off the 24 volt battery about 1/2 way (look at the top) and get your 12 volts... Play with a VOM and see what I mean.
