:) Ok guys, I'm gonna jump in for a moment, from the vast experience here, it is the opinion of most that a driven disc in my clutch would be sufficient? It has never slipped or chattered and I don't tow much. You can see by my sig what the engine has, I don't know the HP. I really can't see spending big bucks for the trick clutches out there unless there is some knowledge out there on this subject. I know there is some advise, so thanks in advance if you will take a moment. The 99 NV4500 is going in real soon. Tim

Tim, I think you have a different clutch than most of us. When swapping the Getrag for the NV4500 the clutch has to changed to a late model style. If you happen to know which type it may be, one if I remeber is a Sachs and the other is a LUC we may be able to help you more. But on the other hand if it is not giving you any problems, it should be fine. Some of the clutched designed for higher horsepower and torque tend to lower driveablity to some extent. You may want to contact one of the clutch vendors in the links section.

very bad news

Well, I went to limp the truck into the shop this am, and wouldn't budge under her own power. I towed her in off the freeway and limped it around back so what gives? After pulling with a friend, got her up in air after a lot of binding, which I assumed was the Getrag problem, However after pulling the driveshaft, discovered the rear end would not turn. After taking the cover off, out came big ugly chunks of pinion gear to meet me! Bummer! Ring gear all chewed up also. Got a fella at the truck yard pricing new gears for me, looks like this is going to be a big winter project. Thanks for the reply. Tim:(

Broken gears

Tim my recomendation would be to replace the whole axle as a unit. Sounds as though it has a major problems, breaking more than one tooth on the crown is unusual, sometimes spinning the wheels will chip the teeth. Given that your truck is 4 wheel drive, the housing could be bent or twisted and have caused the gears to go out of alignment. :(

Considering that you would need to replace the gears and bearings in your existing axle and assuming the pieces of shrapnel didn't damage any other parts, plus the hassle of getting the gears set up properly, a replacement would most likely be cheaper and get you back on the road sooner.

Detroit Locker time?

Hey Tim1!:)

I agree w/ what Neil has mentioned as for purchasing the entire unit w/ the proper backlash specs already set.

I just had my rear axle rebuilt last Summer while on vacation. I wish I would have had the time to have a Detroit Locker installed (in place of the LSD) while all of the pieces were out & on the bench. 1/2 of the cost of the Detroit would of been paid for in Labor Cost savings alone... .

I was looking in my newest issue of Peterson's 4-wheel and off road. They have an article on replacing gears, what tools you need, etc. Doesn't look too bad. Tools cost as much as the low end of doing it yourself plus the only person learing the trade on your truck is you. Not some recent high school drop out who thinks close enough is fine.

I completly disagree with buying a new unit complete. A DANA 70 does not bend or tweak unless really seriously abused i. e. jumped, WAY oversized tires like 54". If a bearing starts to go bad it can throw off backlash heat the ring gear up and guess what? Teeth come off, gears are extremely brittle heating them up or no lubrication just like anything else and they will fail. I would go buy a ring and pinion(new) and new bearings and have it rebuilt. And for a truck that does not have any weight in the back I WOULD NOT go with a detriot or you will end up in the ditch. (Although it would help you get out of the ditch :) ) A normal person can set up a ring and pinion as long as you take your time and do it right. If you have a service manual (shame on you if you do not) then it explains it step by step. :p
