This is cool!

Freedom Isn't Free

I think I better sell my mega cab 3500 right away. It's a city truck and If by chance I ever want to pull a mobile home, I want to make sure I am in my GVWR. Thanks all for showing me the light. Boy what a lesson learned here.

The majority of short bed trucks are city trucks. I use my 8 foot QC 70K a year hauling tools around. The construction industry demands 8 foot beds, as does the RV industry which uses a fifth wheel not a gooseneck. The conversion on a fifth wheel tears up the entire trailer. Ford kicks Dodge and GM's arse by selling what the public wants. 8 foot beds with a large cab are what you see towing fivers and working the construction industry. I just do not see the marketing strategy in the megacab HD. I have not seen many tooling around the construction industy... just QC's with longbeds. Not many at the campgrounds either... . just around town commuters towing a boat on the weekend or wishing it had a 8 foot bed at Home Depot.

A Mega cab dually has a GVWR of 9,900. I'm sure the truck with fuel and two passengers must weigh around 8,200 pounds. So is having 1,700 available really adequate???? :--) I think not. I really didn't want to start a ******* contest, because man I love the sound and pull of a Cummins, but hay, if I screwed up, so be it! Been there, done that before, and probably will do it again. But damn people, wish me luck, not failure. Heck, I'll still come help ya'll out if you break down or just need directions in the Fallon/Reno area. I guess worst case senerio is I take it to Montana for the Cummins conversion!!!!!!!!! Oo. Oo. Oo.

I think it is actually 10,500 for DRW, not that its enough to make a difference. I don't get why it isn't 12,200 like the QC long beds, it is on the same frame.

Thanks for the offer to help people out, thats pretty cool. Ford doesn't make a bad truck if it weren't for the 6. 0. We have them in all our ambulances (van style) and some do fine while the ones that have problems just keep breaking. I looked into GM because I wanted a real crew cab but the GVWR was only 11,500 (Dmax, 6spd Manual) so I get 700 pounds higher and the Cummins with the Dodge.

Tow all the mobile homes you want. The truck is not set for for towing a heavy fiver... . as stated.

Thanks Cobrajet for pointing that out for the 10th time. What's your point? Maybe you have Cab space envy?? I got a funny feeling you do cause you just can't let this one go. Not everyone like you is towing a mobile home.

Pis and moan all you guys want. I am fully legal and fully insured even when I gross 39K. The problem isn't with the truck.

I believe you, USAA said I was fine as long as I don't overload the axle or GVWR. GCWR is not a legally enforcable number so Dodge's max trailer weight means nothing, it is all about how the weight is distributed. Problem with most large 5th wheels is the weight can't be redistributed.

Red360: Good luck with your truck. Most of the people I work with have fords. The six of them that have fords have not had any trouble, nothing like you read about on the ford web site, or this web site. I have a quad cab, it works for my family now. In 3 or 4 years it will be a tight fit for the kids. The mega cab is cool, I just wish Dodge could have built a real 4 door with an 8 ft bed.

I live in Vegas, some day I hope to make it that far North. Of course your THREAD IS WORTHLESS with out Pictures of your new truck.

Boy, i'm sittin here contemplating my poor old 01 3500, towing my big ol 39' teton, and so far zero, zip, nada problems. 45mph down the steep side of baker grade, or cajon pass, exh. brake engaged, trailer has enough brakes to darn near pull the truck in half. CHP drives by me and waves, thumbs up, "nice rig". YET, i'm thinkin bout a f-450/550, maybe an 01 or 02 7. 3. AM I NUTS!!! If dodge dosent get off the pot with a hd 4500/5500. I maybe jumpin ship too. I'm even a little sceptical about the new 6. 7. It's almost got me talkin to myself...

Ram 2500... 8800/9000 GVW

Ram 3500 SRW... . 10000GVW

Ram 3500 DRW... 11500GVW

MEGACAB DRW... . 9900GVW

Ford F250... . 10000GVW

Ford F350SRW... 11500GVW

Ford F350DRW... . 13000GVW

The Ford F250 is set up to tow more or haul more than a MEGACAB DUALLY. The empty weight is 1K less giving it more kingpin capabiltiy and the combined gross is the same as the Dodge... . 23K.

That is the problem with the Megacab as far as towing is concerned... it has little kingpin weight to work with. All I want is a Dodge with an 8 foot bed and a comparable cab to the competition. If you guys can make do with a short bed... GREAT. A lot of the construction industry and RVers cannot. Dodge needs to step up and build the right configured truck

OH, PS: Our homowners truck nazis (i mean association)will not let us park a real medium duty in our driveways, even if it was my primary transportation. Sometimes it makes me regret buyin the place.

Well I can tell you around here in Phoenix I sure have been seeing alot of 3/4 ton Mega towing some big 5'iers. I guess there is a lot of chance takers. In fact I saw 2 3/4 tons and 1 1 ton SRW Mega pulling doubles. Seems to be a popular combo for not being an ideal towing rig.

hahaha... isn't that some BS. . Let me guess. . a Delwebb association? We have that same by-law where I live. Have a buddy that's so far been getting away with parking his Chevy 4500 in his driveway. I don't think it's long before the crack down on him.

Just go on thinking your megacab is a great towing platform. You obviously cannot come to terms with the fact that the numbers don't add up. The original post is all about its inadaquate setup for doing so with its **** poor GVW when compared to its empty weight. The numbers do not lie!! You have tried to turn the tables numerous times even saying the comparison is apple to oranges. It is not! The GVW's are off the manufacturer's websites. I have no issue with the MEGACAB or Dodge... simply agreeing with the original poster on why he is jumping ship. He NEEDS a large cab with an 8 foot bed... a truck Dodge does not build... that simple. If your MEGACAB works for you... GREAT!!! It sucks for me simply towing a moderately sized RV and does not work at all in my business. An issue with a lot of people. That is the fact.

That would be sweet for sure, just be sure to check with the local smog rules first on engine swaps.

Did you have any idea your post would dig all this up? Its all good stuff IMO.

Matt400,

Not at all. I think it is good too, but what is concerning is the guy who could careless about the weight they are towing. Hey, if you lose control and kill yourself... it is a bad thing, but wipe out another family because your pig headed... shame on you. Oh well, still a great thread!!

California, good ole rural yucaipa. They think chapman heights is downtown orange county, what dreamers. I can understand commercial truck limitation, but let's have some reason. I would not want a FL112 or a T2000 parked across the street, but a small C4500, or FL60 in the dw, no graphics or commercial markings, i don't see the problem.
