Any advice on why my 98 5 speed , 2wd jumps out of gear when decelerating? The truck has 320,000miles but only about 80,000 on 4th transmission. It only jumps out of 5th gear. ALso how do you fix it. Thanks

Jumping from 5th

I had this same problem. All I could think of was to have the oil changed in the trans. No improvement. Eventually it was stuck in reverse. Replaced trans for $3600. 5th/reverse shift fork was broken. Scrap metal throughout the whole trans. The new trans lasted about 100K.

jumping out

First glance i agree with the shift fork problem.

Question--you said it had 80k on repair

1 Who did the last repair ?

2 was it for the complete loss of 5 th gear on this same box ? and what did they say was wrong???

3 When you first put it in 5th and under power, slight or heavy foot do you have a rattle in the shifter like b-b's ?

Original trans failed with similar symptoms to yours at 107K. Replaced at Dodge dealer in Dublin (San Jose), CA.

Next trans failed at 192K due to being bone dry two weeks after Jiffy Lube told me it was fine. (We are in court). Replace by Moss Bros in San Bernardino.

Only real symptoms with the first one were extreme difficulty getting it into gear when stopped. Massive hand force and slipping of clutch required. No strange sounds. Eventually it started the "jumping out of gear when unloaded" thing, which I solved for a while with a bungie cord. Eventually it just locked up in reverse, regardless of stick position. Dealer did not mention anything about the fifth/reverse idler. On hindsite, I should have sought service when it first started having trouble, instead of waiting for catastrophic failure.

I am thinking about getting one of those $1500 trans I heard about a carrying it around as a spare for next time.

BTW. I now have the tools and knowledge to check all five oil levels and change my own oil.

Don't trust the minimum wage monkeys at Jiffy Lube. It ain't their truck and they don't care.

I am considering leaving the transport business. It seems silly to pay Dodge dealers for the priviledge of using their POC trucks.

Now I am hearing I sort of grinding thing when I go from accell to decell suddenly. I am thinking the chain in the transfer case may be stretched. This has been getting worse since about 50K.

S. Lewis - give me an name, address, and phone number so I can pick up spare trans for the next failure.

Spare trann

First There is No extra $1500 transmission..... (rebuilt)under warranty!

If you get it from a bone yard better pull inspection cover and see no metal flakes and clean gears befor handing over the cash, then pull the rear cover and do The fix that works!!!

Or just do the fix to your's & check your own fluid-& if for conv' you have them chang your lube YOU supply It. . & have a spare Qt.

You should never have to add fluid, unless it is going some place!!

I have possision of a brand new service unit ,(to be rebuilt some time by yours truley)given to me by another (sad) owner, who left his fate ($$) to others & are in the K's x's 4 not including tow,s and motel's and lost income.

This unit was bought and installed by a D/C shop smome where i cant recall & failed just past 12k later --we'er talking less than +100 miles, there responce to him was SOrry!!! Out of waranty. .

Here he could have returned to that dealer, stated policy adjustment,or got the lawyers, and got some satifaction????

maybe!! more $$$$$$. Some-one didnt fill the new unit? or road test ,(leaks) And-- He-- the owner, didnt check there work, 100-or 1000 or 10,000 mi's later. (found after my inspection NO lube,)

He called dispatch and said he was down, they said this guy dos'nt have transmission trouble call him. There was a rebuild on the way. . wanted to know what could have gone wrong, stated would have to see the transmission. When we hooked up i did the fix for him and he gave me the failed unit for my help-he gave up the core from when he bought the service unit to return to the rebuilder.

which was from STD pre -exdended spline.

If you pull the transmission for a clutch Installa new Input seal every time...

# one source of seepage hard to fine ... Speedo p/u . . remove it today (first get a new o-ring) clean of lube with starting fluid or brake clean, apply clear silcone to oring/sp. unit install cure for 1 hr install lube end of seep--- end of need to top of for +++++++k's

Sorry guys, I haven't looked at this thread in a while, the place is called Trucks-Are-Us in Ft. Worth Texas. I priced a newly rebuilt 5-speed there, and it was $1500 with a core, and it has warranty, not sure how long or miles. The # is 817-483-1980, ask for Tom, real nice guy. Again I apologize for not checking the thread, tdramrmbr, you especially need to call and price it, since you flat out called me a liar in a previous post, I really don't appreciate that.

Core

Unless i missed some thing--the responce was to the post relaiting to a " SPARE" to be carried for back up!

I called no -one anything !

There is no $ 1500. transmission w/wty. ---- (without) a "Core";)
