Why is it that people forget how to drive when it snows Today we had our first measurable snow fall this year (about 1/2") and the raods were parking lots. It was only about 24* today and it started snowing around 3:00pm, now I'm smart enough to now when it's below freezing and it starts to snow that the snow is going to stick to the roads. Well hear in southern Indiana everybody else forgot that because I counted 5 crashes and about 20 to 30 slideoffs in my 20 minute drive from Lanesville to Corydon. In one of these crashes the dumb a$$ was going so fast he rolled the car 3 times after he slid off the raod. I was planing on getting a nap in before I had to come to work tonight but we had so many fire runs I didn't even shut off my truck when I got to the house at 9:30pm. My fire pager has went off nonstop since about 3:15pm today. If anyone has any good winter stories I would like to hear them, maybe it will keep me awake.

No doubt, it's like they have to re-learn winter driving all over again. I dread the first storm that hits during the evening rush hour, we have a 17 % grade in town that most use as an entry/exit road from town, it's like a parking lot when the ski areas close during a snow storm. Kinda funny to watch those sports cars attempting to leave Vernon while the grade just keeps sucking them back down and into town.

Snow? Heck when it RAINS here in southern California people get hit with the stupid virus! At least it's not so cold when you have to scoop them up and tow the twisted metal away. Hang in there. Sometimes somebody appreciates your help!

Snow?

I remember one time I took the train to Denver, had to layover a day and a half to wait for the bus to go to Tulsa for the NFR.

Rented a WHITE Lincoln Town Car, went to dinner and hit the hotel. Overnight 18 inches of the white stuff! Ever look for a WHITE car you've only seen from the inside; after it and every other one is covered with snow.

After brushing of two I started for the license plate (that was smart ).

Finally found it. Headed for the bus station, at around 10mph, folks around me were haulin buckets. I made every light without hittin' the brakes once.

Saw everything you could imagine, busses, trucks taxis etc. , gettin' stuck or crashing into anything that moved or not. I kept on chuggin' at 10mph.

Didn't hit nuttin' and I got hit by nuttin'.



Got flipped off by the go fasters, and I honked and waved as I chugged past. Man, was that fun!!!



Sometimes if you go slower, you end up gettin' there faster.

think it's bad in indiana? come down south and watch for awhile. they close the schools and businesses for an inch of snow. we can tell who are the yankees down here from the natives. predict snow, all southern natives go to the store to buy milk and bread. yankees go to the store and bring home beer and cigarettes.

D. C. area hasn't had snow yet, but I'm dreading the first snowfall.



Too many morons around here think that their new 4X4 SUV will allow them to run at warp factor 9 when the stuff falls. Yeah dummy it'll go that fast... ... . but it won't stop 'till you hit something you didn't intend to (like a tree if we're all lucky, an innocent driver if we're not).

In this area we also have a LARGE Hispanic/Asian population that have never seen snow, much less driven in it.



Makes for an exciting commute.

Problem

The problem with the first and last snows of the year are moisture content. They are very wet. A good dry snow is no problem to get going and stop,as long as you don't do anything foolish,you can boogy. People don't think they just remember the last snow they drove in (probably dry) and go at that speed. Or they are not paying attention and forget to give themselves more time.



There is such a thing as too slow. I have never had to go slower than 30 mph on highway snow and snowing conditions. If you are doing slower on city streets fine,but on the highway you have no momentum and can get in rough situations on banked on ramps and high crowned roads. Not to mention impeding traffic and maybe causing some poor soul to get impaitnent and do somthing stupid. Out on lonesome interstates grossing 80,000 lbs,with good visability,I have run at 50-65mph on dry snow packed highways with no problem.

OK It's not snow related

I went today and picked up my new Matco toolbox and had to take my small 16' flatbed trailer to put it on because I aint liften that thing into the back of my truck. I was on my way to town just strollen down the highway when some dumb a$$ come up behind me, this idiot was almost touching the back gate on my trailer. Well I went about another 2 miles doing 70mph and this idiot is on my a$$ the hole time. I finally deside I've had enough and reach down and grab the trailer brakes and let the smoke role off the tires. The dumb a$$ almost ran off into the grass, had to be the funniest I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER I think I''ve ever seen and I think the guy thought he had done run up on the back of the trailer.



Hope his Wife likes cleaning the Poo out of his shorts and off the seat of the car.

How 'bout when it actually SNOWS on Cuesta Grade? The Central Coast of Ca is not set up to deal with ANY snow what so ever... ... .

How about when it snows in Seattle? There's something like 5 snowplows for the entire city, takes more than a week to do it all. Good thing it doesn't happen often, but it does happen, basically shuts the town down.

The county I live in is probibally over 50% senior citizen. Nothing against seniors (I hope to be one some day) but even in rain, driving around here is interesting. I lose my electric on a regular basis. On the main highway that goes to most Sr. villages here, there is a major accident at least once a week that closes the road for at least 6 hours.

Combine this with the kids just learning to drive, and it just dont work together very well.

You should see the food stores when they threaten snow!! It's like the apocolypse(sp?).

You'd swear that most people in NJ die from starvation during blizzards! Pretty amusing.
