Why does our Government now have a "Department of Homeland Security"??



I thought that was what the "Department of Defense" was supposed to be.



Why do we need both???



Maybe we should to the DOD's original name - "War Department"

I've asked myself the same question.....

Because the gub-ment thrives on more power.

Used to be that dems were the party of big govt.

The republicans arent any different anymore.

Dont worry, we will soon be a socialist nation, and all our problems will be solved.

I think the idea behind the department of defense was to defend other countries, not ours. Now that that need has come up, we need a new department to do it. Why do we need both FBI and CIA, who don't even talk to each other?

Homeland security???

why in the hell did Gov. Ridge get the job, I would think someone with major experience in security and military or law enforcment would be a better choice. Ridge seems like a Bush yes man to me. The entire Fed Gov. is a mess of money motivated self interests.

The reasons we have a Department of Homeland Security are:



(1) The political answer to every crisis is MORE LEGISLATION and MORE CONTROL



(2) Can't control the terrorist threat without closely controlling our borders. Politicians are unwilling to tighten them up because it will hurt somebody's feelings or impact flow of $$$, either of which might cost them votes.



(3) Can't go after the real terrorist demographic because that involves ethnic, religious, or cultural profiling... all of which hurt people's feelings and might cost votes.



(4) Since cracking down on the terrorist threat in any meaningful way is tough and politically dangerous, the obvious answer is to crack down on YOU and ME. The politicians get to grandstand on TV and show how hard they are working in our interests, and they know it won't cost 'em votes because the sheeple will back any measure of control as long as they can pretend they are safe. Don't have to BE safe, just want to FEEL safe.

Before my time, it was called the War dept.

Seems as though the govt is making mission specific depts now.

I sure wish I had the spare $$$ so that I can a specific car (or fill in the blank)for each occasion I may encounter.

Simply put, they needed something new to tax us for. They were running out of ideas, and splitting one department into two was easier than creating a new department. Just my $. 02.
