Trying to be Nice

3406 425hp smoking problem

My wife and I just got an '06 Jeep Liberty CRD Sport. What a neat little truck, I drove the VW TDI and this engine has it all over that one imho. I thoroughly enjoy the feel, its responsiveness and the sound is cool. Now lets see what Mileage I get back and forth to work, so i can afford to run my CTD when I want to.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean but I am very happy with my tdi. Unlike my two DC products it has had no problems in the first 56k miles. I hope you have a good experience with your new liberty but I would be interested to know what kind of mileage you get with the liberty since I doubt you will "have it all over" the tdi's mileage.

In my experience, new owners talking up their vehicles by making vague comparisons do not really have a "humble opinion" ;) ;)

Enjoy the new Jeep.

The wife has a 2005 Liberty CRD and it gets between 23-25 mpg to and from work. Great power and comfort. We really enjoy it.

So I assume you have owned a jeep and your speaking from vast experience. I was stating my opinion and you yours. Differance is that you are suggesting i am FOS, i doubt it.

Hey I have some how ended up with four diesel pickups now. The fourth was a 99 Powerstroke extra cab. Some how I am going to have to sell some of these. I don't think I'll be driving them all or at one time. Thanks

I don't think he was questioning your integrity just stating that he loved his tdi. It is hard for me to imagine an engine that has a better power to mpg ratio than the tdi. Maybe the wife's nb is just geared right but that little car will scoot and gets 46 mpg commuting!

I think it was the comment "In my experience, new owners talking up their vehicles by making vague comparisons do not really have a "humble opinion"

that made me react. I was not talking down the TDI I drove both it adn the liberty and made my choice, whats right for us is not right for someone else.

Hence imho

That I can certainly understand. We are not really comparing apples to apples here. I hope that you really enjoy the new jeep. If the auto companies would continue to deliver quiet, reliable diesels to the car market, we can cut some of the fuel used in this country.

Especially if we start seeing more "home grown" fuel!

All I read/hear is hybrid this and hydrogen that, when bio is existing technology that could be implemented TODAY without reinventing the wheel or creating a new infrastructure for dispensing. With economies of scale I bet it could be reasonably cost effective.

A 4 wheel drive SUV with a towing capability of 5000 pounds and room to haul stuff or a little car that can tow nothing and barely fit 4 full size adults? Two totally different applications. I've drove both quite a bit. The TDIs are nice but if you live out in the country where the roads don't get cleared quickly or ever need to haul something that you might not need the CTD for the Liberty is very nice. And I have seen several get 30 mpg on the highway. Does the Liberty require the expensive timing belt change like the TDIs? VW needs to come out with an affordable SUV that is diesel powered. The Toureg is not affordable with the V10 diesel at 55,000. 00. Something in the 30,000. 00 to 35000. 00 range with at least a 5000 towing capability would be a nice compromise. I hear the 07 Liberty will have a Mercedes engine instead of the VM Motori. Anyone hear of what brought that on? The wife would already have a Liberty if it was the size of the GM Trailblazers or Envoys. I feel it is just a tad to small although I hear they will be putting the Mercedes 320 V6 diesel into the Jeep Commander in the future which is more the size we were looking for.

I find it frustrating that the Liberty CRD only gets low- to mid-20s in commuting applications. I have asked several people who drive them and read posts that seem to confirm similar numbers. It should be getting mid- to high-20s in commuting applications and over 30 mpg on the highway.

Is it the weight of the Liberty which dooms the mileage? The automatic transmission?

Don't get me wrong, I'd buy a CRD Liberty if I needed a vehicle like that. It just should get better fuel mileage than it does.

My brother rented a 10-passenger Dodge Sprinter the other week and it delivered 23 mpg. Dodge goes so far as to publish fuel mileage up to 30 mpg in the Sprinter brochure.

Hey WMatlock, did you remove the Liberty's muffler yet?

I suspect that is part of the reason why it doesn't get over 30 mpg. The Hemi truck guys are finding lots of torque management issues as well as unusually high power loss percentages with that same transmission. The high power loss percentage instead of the normal 25% would explain the mileage to me. Wonder why they didn't offer it with the 6 speed manual like they put in the Gladiator concept truck. There is a 5 to 8 mpg difference between the TDI autos and manuals. I'd bet the same would exist on the Liberty. There is a forum located here that has a little info from owners. www.jeepforum.com

My parents purchased a '00 Golf TDI with an automatic despite my counsel against the auto. Now my father is grumbling about it only getting 34 mpg while commuting. "My manual '00 Golf TDI used to get about 13 mpg better than yours does. See, I told you so!"

I am holding out for a new Wrangler with a CRD and a six speed manual. A diesel Wrangler would be sweet... diesel, manual transmission, four wheel drive, and a convertible in the summer. Could it get any better?

CMullen,

I hope you noticed that I did not say anything bad about Jeeps or anyones choice of vehicle. You suggested that the CRD Liberty had "it all over" the tdi. I simply said I didn't think it would wrt mpg.

Regarding my comment on humble opinions, I have years of experience with people so I feel somewhat qualified to throw that one out there. It wasn't meant to be mean spirited.

Since you want to make comparisons and you are on a site dedicated to the Dodge CTD's it might be more appropriate to compare your new Liberty with a CTD. Your mileage, towing capabilities, and weight might be closer to a CTD than a VW.

I never meant to take away from your pride in ownership. Again enjoy your new Jeep.

Scott

Scott, lets just agree to disagree. I meant no disrespect to TDI's or their owners. I simply said for me the liberty was the better choice and for ME it had it all over the tdi because of what i need.

I could have done a better job of stating it that way and i didnt. If i didnt need a 4x4 and i wasnt (large in stature) the tdi would be a god fit. But for me its not and thats all I meant

enjoy the tdi and the 50 mpg. I will enjoy the liberty and i hope the 30 mpg

Chris ;)
