Trying to be Nice

3406 425hp smoking problem

Wife has on 05 CRD Liberty Limited w/ all the toys that we bought new in June. It has about 7500 miles on it. She has a pretty heavy foot and gets 21 MPG consistantly in 100% in town, running errands. I did average 29 MPG on a 1200 mile trip when we first got it. My wife had been driving a 97 Ram 2500 CTD 4x4 but decided she wanted a 4 door that was a little easier to get a car seat in and out of after we had our first child last spring, but she wasn't interested in a car. Overall we are very happy with it. I've been running B-5 for the last 1000 miles and it seems to like that better then straight #2.

If you have any specific questions, fire away.

Just a bit of info for the new Liberty Owners. I have 7000 miles on mine and just did an oil change today. Put it on the lift and while changing the oil discovered oil on the passanger side of the engine. Got the light out and discovered it was coming from the turbo. After closer inspection it seems the PCV attaches to the air intake right in front of the turbo. Not like my 99 CTD that vents out the tube in front of the engine onto the ground. The turbo has a puddle of oil in it and it was seeping out where the intake tube connected to it and down the block. Seems that GM does the same thing to the DuraMax and they get a pool of oil in the bottom of the intercooler boot. I vented mine out like my Cummins is but unless you know about this you cant tell from looking at it from topside. I can hardly see the turbo from the top let alone that it has oil leaking out of it. Just a FYI.

DieselLady where did you get your CRD?

Got it in Carson City NV. I have a place in AZ also so I use it to tow behind the motor home. The enviro wackos in Calif won't let you buy it if you have a Ca. address. Are you thinking of getting one???

Anybody know about a juice or power pup equivalent for the jeep CRD? I'd like to increase HP and torque[/QUOTE

Check with TST and also go to www.dieseltuning.com I know that dieseltuning has one that will increase the hp and tq by about 30%. But I heard TST was working on something also. I am waiting for the 7500 mile mark before I do anything to mine in case I want to register it in CA. Has to have 7500 so they consider it a used vehicle.

Here is link to TST... . They must still be working on it.

I got a Jetta TDI last week. It is fantastic and has gobs of torque for the weight. Pulled a steep long grade (two sand pit escape ramps on downside) in 6th gear (auto) at 70 mph without slowing or kickin down to a lower gear.

Just got a CRD Liberty today. Haven't really had chance to work it out yet but it is very comfortable. Noisy but comfortable. Sounds a little like a second gen when it is cold. Love that noise! Wife likes the Liberty better. I don't mind the Jetta as it is quicker, so I guess we can work it out.

Both vehicles are oil particular, although the CRD is not as limited as the service department indicated. They stated ONLY Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic, whereas the book indicates 0W-40 synthetic SL/CF but if not available, 5W-40 with at least that SAE rating is fine. Of course, that is the weight for Mobil Delvac synthetic for the big engines. I'll have to check the specs.

VW is strictly 505. 01 spec oil which leaves about three sources, none at Advance or AutoZone.

No gas burners in the yard now. No more exhaust emissions tests.

Just a note: if you want a warranty from the DC folk, you'll have to buy one as they are down to 3yrs/36k. I didn't get an extra warranty but am rethinking that and may cough up the loot. The very idea of it makes me exceedingly irritated. Obviously, DC was losing money repairing their vehicles under warranty. Long warranties are not costly to the manufacturer if the quality is in the product to begin with. So, the Jetta has nearly twice the powertrain warranty of the Jeep.

Thanks for the tip on the vent for the CRD, Diesel Lady.

As for CRD mileage, I wouldn't worry about the mileage if you have a 4wd. It takes fuel to turn all that extra junk. IF 4wd isn't needed, I wouldn't waste the money or fuel. Also, the Liberty is heavy, nearly 4300 lbs. Jetta TDI is3241 (auto). Thus, the Liberty CRD auto has 1 horse per 27 lbs; the Jetta TDi auto has 1 horse per 32 lbs. Pretty close. On torque, the Liberty CRD auto shows 1 ftlb per 14. 6 lbs, the Jetta TDI auto 1 ftlb per 17. 6 lbs. Still close. Course, the Jetta is FWD whereas my Liberty is 4wd. The mileage difference has a lot of factors. The two fueling systems are far from identical.

The Liberty is hardly something one would describe as aerodynamic.

So, I can now cover both sides of the debate. Unfortunately, I no longer have my 3500 Dodge Cummins. Didn't need it anymore.

Update - CRD is in shop. Won't run with OD-OFF. Bucks and jumps like fuel supply interrupted as in bad wire. Might be trans TCC and computer trying to figure out which gear/clutch to engage/disengage. Dunno. The transmission ratios/performance are goofy as you can't plug it into 3rd. Only 1, 2 or D with option of "off the OD". It is grossly underpowered. It takes off ok but has no punch on upper end. Does have a lot of interior room.

I already hate it, so doubt I will keep it very long. It is a good idea that didn't quite make it - at least mine didn't.

My last post. I no longer have a CTD, so I won't take up space here. This is a super forum and the degree of assistance offered on this site is fantastic. TDR is great! Oo.
