I just got back from a little tweak and test drive. If I understand the wastegate concept correctly then the black allen screw limits the amount of boost going from the turbo to the wastegate actuator on the exhaust housing. When the boost reaches a certain level (say 17lb for stock), the wastegate actuator opens and the extra boost (above 17lb. ) is vented to the exhaust. I tightened the allen screw about 1 full turn and then took for a test drive. Going uphill empty with about 7/8 throttle I topped out at 29lb boost. I think this is good. In Charlton Heston's terms; "They're going to have to pry this truck from my cold, dead hands. " Am I headed in the right direction or were the last 2 years of staying up till 2:00 am reading archived posts in vain?

edit: I'm guessing that when towing or puting more load on it the boost might climb to dangerous or at least inefficient levels so I might need to back off the screw a bit.

Its been a while since I looked at it but I think it has a hole in the elbow that is covered by the setscrew so that boost signal is vented to atmosphere instead of to wastegate diaphram. Moving the setscrew covers or uncovers the hole. Pull the rubber hose from the metal tube where it connects by the valve covers and plug the hose, this will tell you your max boost available. I went from 38lbs boost with the boost elbow in place to 38lbs boost with no wastegate at all due to a change to a 16cm housing.

Right. The way the elbow keeps the boost signal from reaching the actuator is to vent to atmosphere. Do I need to use loctite on the allen screw once I find my target top end boost?
