Well, I bought a '99 24 valve 5sp extended cab 3500 the other day. It has about 186,000 miles, but it is CLEAN. I think I want some more power. I try to buy the trucks cheap and sell them in 6 months so the deprecation doesn't bite me, so I need the mods to be fairly easy to take on and off. I was thinking about an EZ edge. Is it true that the edge comp can add 210 HP? One part of me wants to go cheap and easy and one part of me wants to put smoke in the lap of a lowrider. By the way I am 19, so I kinda need to show off;). What should I do?????

Congrats on a great [new] truck. I have an Edge Comp and DD stage 3 injectors, and the two of them together, plus my HX40 gave me probably 200 HP over bone stock. But that same combo on an ETC motor (like yours) would likely be closer to 250 more HP. If all you did to an otherwise stock ETC truck was add an Edge Comp box, I would speculate it would ad at most 125 HP. But, with a stock turbo, you likely would have such high ETGs, you couldn't really ever use the full potetial of that Comp box. Likely the safest you could push it would be a setting on the Comp that would be about equal to an EZ. So, my $. 02 worth would be to go with an EZ if all you want to do is one mod.

Being your 19, you need power and smoke for sure !!! I usually say get the EZ and larger injectors, but in your case, get the Comp. box IMHO. This way, if you start slipping the clutch, you can just turn it down until you replace same. Better becareful though, at 186,000 miles you are about 1/2 way to a complete overhaul :D :D :D . Have fun and enjoy the new ride.

The EZ box alone is a great mod. , but you will be hard pressed to create a smoke show with only the EZ and stock injectors.

All kiding aside, make sure you check your fuel pressure before you add any fueling mods. , the VP44 isn't cheap to replace.

Comp box DD3's and a south bend clutch, then if you want to get nuts, o ring the head bully dog 5 injectors bigger turbo and a huge shot of nos, then there is always lpg. Hey if you're gonna do it do it big:p

I'd be very nervous about attatching a pump wire type box on a VP44 that has 186,000 miles. I bet it smokes the pump.

MikeR is right! Many of the '99s and '98. 5 24v 24v CTDs had VERY short lives after attaching a major fueling module (i. e. , the kind that attaches to the VP44 solenoid wire).

72k+ and knockin' on wood! :D

RWALLACE

Want to smoke out a low rider. I dont blame you.

Install a smoke generator

1 push button switch

1 fuel pump or tap your lift pump

1 oil buner nozzel

10 feet 14 gage wire

1 solinoid valve to turn fuel on n off

install nozzel after turbo

happy smoking

ps we used this system on us army tanks . ex army tank mechanic.

original pump?

I wonder if it's the original pump with those kind of miles on it. Would be interesting to know. I have a '99 6spd, hot 3-level fueling box from Edge and an EZ with DD II's. 56k and counting... runs great.

pumpin

Chrysler bought me a pump at 28k. Mighty kind of em. I tapped the wire about 5k ago no problems yet(knockin on wood also). Comp with only 275s should generat smoke aplenty for around 8 or 9 hundred. BUY AN EGT GAUGE. Oh did I mention that you should install an egt guage. So in summation you will spend around a grand and have enough smoke to fill a small passenger car.

On a different note. When I fire up my truck now it smells like a skunk. I love it but my girlfriend is annoyed.

So do you think I will blow my pump w/ both an EZ and a comp? How hard is the comp to take off? Man, I wish I could one of these dang chips used. How much is the pump? Thanks for all the advice.

If the original VP44 has made it this long, it will probably handle some mods. Check your fuel pressure to make sure your lift pump is good. Who knows, maybe the lift pump has been dead/out for the last 50k miles? Usually if the VP44 makes a few thousand miles on a dead lift pump without seizing, it will continue to run if BOMBed.

Mine made it about 10k on a bad lift pump, and pulled -3psi on the pressure gauge when I checked it. So I feel confident that the VP44 will hang in there. That was about 15k ago. I now check fuel pressure every oil change, until I get some permanent gauges installed.

While I am hardly an expert on the VP44, I have a tendancy to agree with Nathan. IMHO, you either have a VP44 that's a keeper or you have a weak unit, that would have died along time ago. Since you have 186,000 miles on the truck and presumably the same pump, I'd say it's a keeper. That being said, I wouldn't ride around all the time with any fueling box set at max. power. You are asking the pump to perform outside it's specifications and it may hurt the pump in the long run. That's why I run what I have in my truck. IMHO, large injectors and a low level fueling box, such as the EZ, are much less strain on the VP44 rather than running a high output box all the time, to receive the same results. While I have a TST PM3 Comp. box installed as well, I leave this for play only, not for use as a daily driver.

One thing you do not want to do with a major fueling box is to quickly take it up to redline and then just let off the go pedal. It will last much longer if you ease into the throttle and then ease out of the throttle, as the VP44 gets it's lubrication from the fuel. Just my $0. 02 .

I don't have any experience with that box, is it a rebadged EZ ? Check to see how it installs. If it requires you to pierce the VP44 wire, it's probably a major fueling box, such as the Edge Comp. or the TST PM3. If it only requires you to plug into the MAP sensor and Data plug, it's going to yield the about same results as the EZ box.

I wholeheartedly agree with Big Saint,

I always recommend big injectors (with possibly an EZ) over a major fueling box. You achieve the same result in the end, but with almost no added stress on the injection pump. Boxes cranked-up make the pump run harder out of it's desinged specs. Injectors simply make use the fuel that is already present, and an EZ changes the pump timing with no added stress.

The Bully Dog torque dog is a re-labled Diablo Power Puck. I have seen this box in action and it is nice and it does work, I just think the EZ is a little better since you can change the fuel-at-boost settings by moving the jumpers inside. If you do get a Torque Dog, just make sure you get one of the newer units that has the boost module (map sensor) wires built into it.

I think a set of BD 3's will run you about $550-600, it's been awhile and I'm having a senior moment. The 5's I'm using now where $995. 00, but they gave me a $500. 00 credit for turning in the 3's, so they cost me $495. 00.

Check the classified's on the TDR, there might be a set of 3's out there from someone who has upgraded.
