Adjust valves, preferably on the tight end of the spec range. Will probably help with noise reduction AND you will know the valves are "right. " Also, mark top dead center on the damper which you should then use to up the timing to 16. 5*. Push the fuel plate forward or, much better yet, install a 10 plate. Change transmission fluid and make necessary adjustments while the pan is off. Change diff fluid.

Enjoy!

Get the normal guages, change the trans fluid & filter and add a deep pan of your choice. I wouldn't throw a #10 plate in their because of EGT's in towing, rather try and find a used #11 or modify your stock one with a small #10 like curve in it. I have a good picture of a #10 if you want it. Change the diffs & transfer case fluids, and throw a 3K GSK in DEFINATELY. Runs the valves & bump the timing like the others said. Timing can usually be good for 1-2mpg's! ;)

That should cover it for a daily driver/tow rig. ;) :-laf

Thanks guys.

Mark I'll probably call sometime if I have some more questions.

I am thinking about getting a torque converter and valve body already.

This is a tow vehicle so I am not going to go crazy with it (yet atleast :-laf )

Won't be any EGT issues on a 180 pump and 10 plate. At least in stock position. I never saw over 1000* preturbo on mine, towing, with an otherwise stock truck at the time. Still have room to slide the plate ahead. :D Make sure to use the boost elbow.

Just like the title reads.

Bought a 96 auto 3500 98k miles runs great 20mpg...

What do I need to do besides the KDP?

Hey J,

With 98k on the transmission, find out if it was rebuilt or still factory. I would not do a TC and VB on original seals since the higher line pressures may blow out a seal. Just a thought. But along with everyone here:

GSK #1 those wake up these trucks

plate, timing, Valve Adjust to name a few items which help these trucks.

Maybe EGTs won't be an issue with a #10 plate, but won't it make the transmission unhappy??

Very possibly! ;)

Mine didn't like the 10, even by itself. Was really griping when I threw a set of 370s into the mix. :-laf :-laf Had it in stock position, and tightened up the AFC spring, to help the transmission live longer. Lasted 6mths after adding the injectors, and no towing. :-laf And from talking to the guy at Goerends, according to him, someone had already been in as far as the O/D unit. Don't know about the rest.

Had 2 burnt clutch packs and a bad sun gear in the O/D. Never saw the inside of the T/C to look at the clutch, but I bet it wasn't in good shape either.
