Did my first fuel filter change on the CTD today at 13,750 miles. It went pretty stright forward just like I have read here,

1 drain diesel fuel

2 unscrew cap and pull filter

3 replace filter and o ring

4 screw your new billet fuel fitler cap on( I skiped out on that one for now but wanted to do this step so bad)

5 turn key acouple of times to fill it back up

6 have fun with a new clean filter

When I pulled the filter I knew right way it was nasty and now Im thinking of bumping up the time between change to around 10K.

Here is a pic of that nasty thing next to the new one Napa special yeah I know I was up there the other day and grabed one next time Ill get a fleatguard.

Only trouble I ran into was when I went to restart it I turned the key to fill it back up and started it, it studered ran then died. So I turned the key acouple of more times and the code P0581 Speed Control Multiplexed Switch 1 High poped up. Anyone have any idea why that would have been set?

All in all it went smooth, thanks for all the help here guys

When I do mine instead of turning the key of and on a few time i turn it to the cranck position for just a split second, just enough to turn the motor a little without starting it. If you do that and let the key come back to the run position the lift pump will run for 25 seconds instead of the 5 or so seconds by cycling the key.

I changed my first fuel filter at 9700 and it looked exactly the same. I wonder why they look so dark. My other filters from my small tractor and transfer pump are more golden brown, I run a light green highway fuel in them. Our big stuff runs off road diesel, so they all look dark red from what I can see looking down in the spin on filter. Not dark grey.

My fuel gelled on me this winter and I had to change the filter at about 2000 miles and it looked about the same as JWillms.

I'm beginning to wonder if the factory filters start out dyed black. Anybody done more than one change?

I did mine last saturday. I'm on the road, so I asked for the motel's permission to do it in their parking lot.

I put a container under the truck, then opened the valve to drain the fuel. Next I removed the old filter (black) & wiped out the inside of the housing. Replaced the o-ring after dipping the new one in the container of fuel. Put the new filter on the cap and lubricated the bottom seal with fuel.

After I put it all back together and torqued it down, I bumped the starter and let the LP run until it shut off. Tried to start the truck... no dice.

Bumped the starter again and let the pump run... still won't start.

I bumped the starter a third time, then went under the hood to see if anything was leaking. While I'm looking at the filter housing, some movement caught my eye. There were little whiteish bubbles on the asphault, moving toward the back of the truck!!!

Some of you already know what I did. I forgot to close the valve!!!

I felt like an absolute fool. Thank goodness I was around behind the motel so no one else saw.

OK, I've told on myself now.

I did mine today at 12000 miles also and mine wasn't near that dirty. In fact it was something between a the filters your showing.

I did mine @ 1100, 8k,15k,22k all were as dark or darker. The first was really bad. The last so far at 30k was a darkish grey. No crap really just dark.

The funny thing I noticed was I changed my filter at 7500 It has been in the truck for a year now . I dont put a lot of miles on the truck. Filter came out looking almost new I do run Stanadyne All year, This was the second winter with the original filter.

So, does that mean the black filter really needed to be changed or not? Is the Asphaltines particulate enough to clog the filter or just enough to discolor it?

Inquiring minds must know these things.

I think Im going to do my next one at 10K and see how it looks I figure it will look about the same but I think it has a lot to do with where you fill up and how clean there fule is so its one of those thangs that will change with every filter change.
