The only difference (between a 2003 and a 2004. 5) is the cooled EGR for emissions. KCJackson is right, Dodge (and all other light truck diesel engine suppliers) won't need to meet that emission spec until 2004. Medium and heavy truck engine makers will have to meet the tougher emission levels by Oct. of this year. The Cummins ISB is a popular engine in medium duty trucks (FedEx trucks, school buses, motorhomes) and will be EGR equipped by the end of this year.

M'staedt, are you pullin our leg. How did you get to drive the new body style ram. I got to see and hear one at the "dealers only" plant tour in fenton a couple months ago but we couldn't drive it. I think I might smell a little B. S. here:-laf

Well... . I just went out to area 51 in nevada (or wereever it is) and test drove the yet to be designed 2008's!!! they are so quiet! cant even hear em at all!! tourqe output is determined by the limits of your mind!! if you believe that you have 200,000 foot pounds of tourqe you do... ... ... . Oo. oh, never mind, thats my idea for a matrix movie. ! :-laf

Jim

Ya well you got me beat cause I've only gotten to drive up to the 07' model:-laf :-laf :-laf Man this is a bunch of huey. :p

Roger Rodbolt,

the 2003 and 2004. 5 (the ones I've seen) do NOT have the variable vane turbo.

Lucas and Jim S. ,

Do you think the only 2003 or 2004. 5 vehicles that exist are show trucks for dealer promos or car shows? Those are the LAST of the long string of development mules, prototypes and pre-production trucks built before they start building production trucks. Even if the 2003's you've seen were the only ones built, SOMEBODY gets to drive them. Some of the ones you haven't seen get the s#!* driven out of 'em!

Oh, good,, So does that mean the 3rd Gen Dodges will be "No s#!*" models ? That would be cool,, finally a Dodge with a no s#!* attitude,, now if only the dealerships could get the same attitide.

I was simply being dumb:eek: , I know nothing about what is out there and who gets what when!

Jim

M'staedt, I'll admit there are trucks out there that are being tested that you might have seen, but you have not answered the question, How did you get to drive one? Dodge wouldn't let us dealers drive the one I saw at the plant that day so it's hard to believe they let you drive one just because. So what's the deal? Unless you work for Dodge I find your story hard to believe:confused:

I work as a test engineer for a tier 1 supplier to DaimlerChrysler (as well as Volvo Truck, Freightliner, and others). We have been helping DCX with preparation and road testing of the DR for several years. Some of the luckier guys I work with have been on those road trips and have logged plenty of miles on prototypes. I've been on a couple of road trips with other vehicles, but I've only had a chance to buzz around town for an afternoon with a couple of DR's. Most of the time we can't even show them to anybody, but the 2003's are close enough to production that DCX is not so secretive with them anymore.

Hey Lucas,

Leave M'staedt alone!

I think your a little Jealous!!

I got to sit in and rev the engine in a Black 2004. 5 Dually EGR'd Cummins in January.

These trucks do exist.

And I know, because I work for Cummins.

:-{}

Hey, hey , hey. Take it easy. If M'staedt would have said right away what his job was I would have believed him. I just didn't understand how someone who didn't have an inside connection could have driven one of these trucks. Sorry for doubting you M'staedt, but being in the car bussiness I hear so much B. S. you just are a little skeptical sometimes. By the way jwilliams3, jealous not hardly. I get to drive more new Dodge and Chevy trucks in one week than some people drive in their whole lives. Not braggin, just stating the facts. ;)

Well that's a good question. When I took the plant tour last month they showed us a "projected" time line for the launch. It showed Job #1 sometime around late august if I recall, however, I have about 10 trucks ordered now and 3 of them are on "D" status, which means the order has been picked up and I have a V. I. N. # on the truck. It also then tells me the month and week the truck will be built. Of the 3 trucks on "D" one truck is on for the first, second, and third week of July, which makes absolutely no sense considering the info they gave me earlier. When the trucks go to "D1" status then I will know the exact build date to the day. Maybe that will shed a little more light on things. Oo.

JWilliams3,

I think we're talking about the same truck. Early in this thread you mentioned a black truck with black rims. Quad cab, short box disguised as a 1500? Did you have a hand in building it?

I also got to cruise in a 2003 regular cab dually a month or so ago. This one was pretty much production intent. I took it to our local dealer in town to give them a sneak peak and gave their diesel tech a little joy ride.

Lucas,

I'm the one that's jealous. I get to work around prototype vehicles all the time, including a bunch of Cummins equiped stuff, but I'm still driving my old '78 Dodge 1/2 ton!

I have seen the "Black 1500 quad cab" you mention, it was the first time I ever heard the new Engine running in a truck while it was moving.

Scary quiet is all I thought!!

All the new trucks have a lovely HY35 turbo.

I wonder if there are gonna be any exhaust housing variations, or wastegate variations..... doesn't look like much room to change turbos tho :(
