Well, I'm a former 1st Gen owner and replaced that with my current 3rd Gen, but I've been searching for another truck for my daily 100 mile commute to keep the mileage down on the '03. I found a '98 2500 QC long-bed 2wd with the 12-valve engine, automatic, 3. 54 rear, and 140k miles at a small dealership in Michigan. They've had it for over a year and were motivated to move it, so we did a deal.

I picked it up yesterday and drove it 7 hours home without a problem. Rock solid at 80mph with no pull or shimmy. According to the receipts they gave me, the truck has wintered in Nevada so there is no rust. The receipts also show the truck received all new brakes and a valve adjustment within the past 20k miles.

I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd gen forums and working on this truck. I'm hoping to get many more miles out of it over the coming years!

Are those brackets hanging out the side of the bed in the front? It looks like camper mounts..... the old owner probably did a good bit of traveling. Nice truck.

Those are camper mounts for sure, I got the same on my truck. I am in the process of mounting a pair of CB antennas on them to make them look functional again.

I recognized them because my brothers truck had them installed when he bought the truck..... it also has the bumper mounts.

Thanks, guys.

That's a good eye to see those brackets. Yeah, I'm going to pull them off as one of my first mods. I just don't like the way they look on there.

I've learned quite a bit about the 3rd gens, but I'm clueless about the 2nds. I've got a lot of searching ahead of me to get all my questions answered!

I just love the way this 12-valve sounds at idle. Just like a big rig engine. :)

You're just gonna get happier. Check out Geno's Garage 96-98 engine specs. These engines appear to have the best of all the injector pumps and as far as I can tell, might run on lamp oil.

Be sure to jig or tab the KDP if it isn't already done.

I've had mine for over 10 years (bought new) and have no interest in a new one.

The 2nd Gen forums have an unbelieveable amount of info on them.

Congrats; Tom

Ditto to all of what Tom said. I like driving my 1996 as much today as I did when I brought it home from the dealer as a pup in 1996. I have never had any kind of vehicle I could say that about. Will they run on lamp oil? Maybe. Stove oil, for sure. In a pinch, you might be able to run it on canola oil from the wholesaler.

Tab your KDP. It's not that tough a job. Get a copy of the factory TSM, and it's pretty straightforward. Mine was fine, but I tabbed it anyway. I had help from my daughter's kitten (now a full grown cat who moved out). And yes, the kitten was a tabby. ;)
