Im wondering if I need a heat sheild or not? Does it really make a difference? Or how about a exhaust blanket? Also what if I go through deep water etc? what if I get the "open" K&N wet? I Have went through deep muddy water before and had my engine very dirty including my air box?

Jannetty racing has an isolator thingy for $30 that will seal off the filter from the rest of the engine Bay. using the hood as its roof as you close it. then just cut the hole for the Psychotty or my airbox and walla.

What Jannetty sells is a shield, but its not a box. It just seperates the filter from the turbo. You dont have to cut anything to install it. Do you need it?, no, but it helps. You can get a K&N wet but where it is located it wont be a problem. If you are going to be in a real dusty area, you should consider a 25-0880 pre filter to help keep the filter clean, they are only about 20 bucks.

Exhaust blankets are nice too, they will help control underhood heat. Persoanlly, i dont like to insulate cast iron with anything since it leads to more rusting and cracking.

Sky,

Run it without the shield and see what your EGTs are. I doubt that shield will have that much effect. If it totally isolated the underhood air from the filter, yeah maybe, but it doesn't.

As far as mud/water is concerned, figure it is as high as the factory snorkel through the fender was...

Might want to get the sock for it.

They also have another tpe of prefilter that looks like somebodys Pantyhose. It is supposed to act as a water shield. They use then on Jet Skis alot. They are about the same price, i dont have a part number though.

In regards to the Jannetty shield, it wont so much keep hot air from reaching the filter, what it will do is keep radiant heat from the turbo from heating up the air filter, so it does really work, but dont expect to see huge EGT drops

what i was implying was the heat sheild thing would prevent water from splashing on it, up between the engine and fender. I couldnt tell from his website if it actually sealed the whole filter in, it it did then you could cut a hole in the cowl, to draw air from, and not hurt your air flow to the filter by isolating it from the engine bay.

It will block some splashing, but no, it does not cover the filter and does not require a hole like the Psychotty, it uses the exsiting fenderwell hole.

Jannetty shield

I received and installed the Jannetty Shield on my truck last week. I did notice the truck cools down slightly quicker. They changed from aluminum to stainless steel and just the shield is $50. I want one of Todds air boxs as soon as they are ready as this should help draw in the most outside air. E-Mail me Todd as I have lost all my address's. Thanks,Sam

I remember your first few posts... LOL.

LOL I know I cant help it, I think Im starting to undersand what people go through when there addicted to drugs. Its hard to fight addictions!

I am "JUST ABOUT" done bombing (I think). Kat is going to send me a spring set up thingee for my hy35, then I would like to try to get away with dd2's with out a new turbo. If I do that I will come up on a bomb day to get that done.

I did order the prefilter for the K&N, its on back order. I do have a question though. Im kinda wondering the way it just hangs there where the air box use to be. I tried to jam it up in the corner but it just falls down when I hit a bump. And I definatly is much warmer on the turbo side.

Sky... my K&N fits nicely up in the corner... maybe try twisting it a bit at the turbo, then re-tighten.

Injectors are fairly simple to do... you don't have to wait for a BOMB day... I can help about any time. If you want to try it yourself, I can talk you thru it over the phone. Let me know.

Hey, Sky...

You saw my set-up at Timberline. When you put the pre-filter on it will expand the size of the RE-0880, and, like mine, should butt up against the firewall and be stable. For sure, if you get the heat shield, the RE and Pre will lay on it and rest against the engine side of the heat shield. I put my hand on the engine side of the heat shield after shut-down and it's hotter than the filter side, so I do believe it deflects heat. I have no clue as to other benefits. It should also provide a "shield" from water splashing from under and the engine side of the K&N, but it's no way a protector from emursion. You'll have more to worry about than a wet filter if you get under water that high up :D

K&N's are a PITA to clean and re-oil, IMO, so I really like the pre-filter 'cause after 13K, when I peel it back and look at the RE, it looks just like it came out of the box. The way I drive, I'm betting that if I keep the pre clean I may never have to clean the RE. I take the pre off every 5K at oil change and tidy it up.

Sky,

I built a simple strap bracket; a circle around the "neck" of the filter-hose joint, with two "legs" that bolt onto the bolts for the original filter housing. Keeps it in place nicely.

BTW, I lived in Medord (3 miles west of Phoenix actually) for over 30 years up untill Nov. 95.

I run the 0880 and polyester prefilter on mine. I also made a heat shield from some polished diamond plate I had lying around. Not sure how much difference the shield makes but I know it can't hurt. It does provide some protection from splashing up through the fenderwell. The prefilter does bead up when exposed to small doses of water.

If you do end up using the "pre-filter" sock thing, be sure to only LIGHTLY oil it. I have seen a few come through out shop that have been overoiled, and it makes a mess of the inside of the turbo & intercooler. The last thing you want on the inside of your intercooler is oil, because it will be detrimental to the cooling of the air passing through it. Pretty common problem on the Fords because then run the crankcase blow-by through the intake system--and that's why they have a ton of problems with boost leaks, etc.

Sp be careful with the oil! :D
